Vin Numbers?
 

Hello all, just bought a 69 possibly 70 model stepside. Ran ito an issue with the VIN numbers. Apparently, the vin plate on the door jam had been removed and replaced with other than factory "rose" pop-rivets. tried to get it inspected here in Kansas(bought it in MO WITH a title!!) unfortunatley, KS wont pass me on inspection so i can get it licensed.

Can someone tell me where there might be anouther vin on the truck, possibly the frame? The crossed the door jam vin with a number on the frame, but it started our 9S#####, the vn on the door started out CE140S50987....no where near looking like the "supposed" vin they said was on the fframe.

Any ideas? I have to pay 900 in court/lawyer fees to make sure that the truck was never stolen or some BS.

Top of the framerail by the power steering box, drivers side. The number they saw was probably the one on the side of the framerail, directly underneath the door.

Nah, the one they read was the one by the steering box on the top rail.
The reason Im confused is that I live in KS, next to LMC truck parts, I recently recieved a mag from them that lists all the vin number combos for my year and 67 through 72.....the number they seen( as well as I) starts with a number. All chevy vins start with a "C"..not a number like on the frame??
Researched the number but totally lost...oh well..LOL

Have you tried www.vinwiz.com I tried my VIN in several decoders and this was the first I found that knew I had a 68 gmc.
I've also used www.compnine.com to check the RPO codes for newer vehicles. Might find something if your frame came from a 1980 or newer truck. Good luck with your search.

Most cases the stamped number on the top of the frame rail next to the steering gear, is actually only the last 6 digits of the VIN which is the actual number of the truck. That is the number that should correspond with the title, and the door jam tag.

The preceding alpha numeric digits are codes for what the truck was built as.

Just my .02 on this... I'm by far no expert on this, but that is how my VIN breaks out on my 68.

The Vin you listed that is rivited to the door jamb is incomplete. It decodes as follows;
C 2 wheel drive
E v8
1 1/2 ton
4 cab with bed
0 1970
S st louis MO build plant
50987 Build number... but the last digit is missing.

The VIN you listed as stamped on the frame, does not match. It is a partial VIN, and is how it was done. 9S###### The 9 is for 1969, the S is St Louis plant, and the rest is again, the serial number.
Your VIN tag, and frame do not match.

Other locations for the VIN are probably not going to satisfy the state since they are not stamped. There should be one on the option sheet in the glove box door, and possibly one over the latch mechinism, on the inside door jamb, drivers side door. (not the cab) Those are the only other places other than the 2 you and your DMV have discovered.

In reality, you should not have to spend money (not a lot anyways) to prove you are innocent. I would look into the local laws on this, and then contact the person you got it from. If you can point at him, then the heat is off of you. However, if it turns oout to be built of stollen parts, you are gonna lose it, and its not lokely you'll see your money from the guy you bought it from.
Once you can prove it is not hot, you should be able to get a VIN through your state. Again, you need to look into your local laws. It will be treated like a kit car, or a totaled car getting a salvage title, or a home built.
Expect red tape, and lots of it.
You WILL be treated like a crook.
If the truck is a $500 beater, I would personally consider taking it apart and treating it like a pile of parts.
If it is a nice truck, it may be worth the fight.
Personally, I would lock it up inside and not let them impound it, which they may well try to do.

Missouri is not as difficult as Kansas.

When I got my '67 they never looked at when I got it registered in my name.

I have heard of others having problems bringing vehicles into Kansas from out of state having similar problems.

We sold a guy a restored truck, nice '63 body on a '69 frame and before he could get it registered in his name in Kansas we had to provide him with the titles for the '63 and '69.

There are no numbers on the frame rail by the steering box on my truck. My title vin. numbers match my tag on the door post. My truck was made in Calif. Could the frame not have been stamped in Calif?

some frames didn't get stamped for one reason or another. My 72 burb is unstamped... and it seems to be very common in 67

Try rubbing with scotch bright near the area. I had to bring mine out where I could see it this way.
