What trans in a 2wd '85?

What transmission typically came in an '85 Chevy 2wd swb Silverado with a 350? It has p/w & d/l, so I assume it's more than the typical base model...true?

Thanks,

Ed

Stock would have been the 700R4.

And the 2wd 1/2 ton did not have an option of a 350 engine.

WHAT? I don't think that's right is it? This one has one, and sure doesn't look like it has ever been swapped out. I never heard that the 350 wasn't available in a 1/2 ton truck. Appropriate VIN # is "L" which equals 350 right?

TH-350's where common in these trucks. 350 engines were also options.

I knew they came with a 350, I thought that was B.S.

Any way to tell other than just climbing around under the truck to ID the pan?

Well, a 350 Turbo will be a 3 speed transmission, the 700R4 is a 4 speed w/overdrive. The pan is a good way to tell also.

The 700R4 is not the most common transmission in these trucks. They were available, but certainly not a guarantee of having one in yours. More than likely it will be a TH350

In 1985, for a 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive pickup, you could not get a 350 cubic inch engine. Anyone who says you could, is wrong. Biggest engine available in that was a 305 cubic inch. Like it or not, that's how it was.

You had to step up to the 3/4 ton to get a 350, or a 4 wheel drive 1/2 ton. The suburban 2wd 1/2 ton did have the option of a 350 though. But an 85 chevy truck 1/2 ton 2wd... no 350 available, it's been swapped.

I agree with Randy and the others who said a 350 was not available on a 1/2 ton 2WD in 1985. Many have been swapped in during the 25 years since then, though, including mine.

The transmission could be a 700R4 or a TH350C. I have the TH350C in my '86.

If you have the build sheet (in the glove box or under the seat), then check out this page for the build rpo.

According to this page the th350 was still available in the 85. My dad's 85 has the th 350 with a 305 factory. It was still availible in 85.

Started in 81 I believe. No 1/2 ton Chevy/GMC truck could be bought with any engine bigger than the 305.
When I bought my 82,4x4,I could only get the 305 in it.
My 85 GMC has a 350/350,factory trans-newer engine.
