Gas guage question

My gas gauge reads but when its full it all the way to the right and when its empty its usually on the 1/2 to 3/4 mark. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Re: Gas guage question

I know mine was showing more gas then what I had and I found it to be a bad wire coming from the sending unit. Each little wire as they broke showed more gas on the gauge,so when the wire is totally broke would read full,I guess just the way the resistance is set up on the chevy sending unit,

Re: Gas guage question

Wires on the sending unit, and the ground wire to the frame at the sending unit, are the first places I would check. In my recent experience, all of the wires were good, so I replaced both sending units, but it turned out to be the gauge itself. You can search for a lot of tips to diagnose this here and elsewhere, but I think there is still a lot of guesswork involved. For me, it was about $75 for 2 aftermarket sending units and $50 for a new gauge, + new hoses and clamps on the sending units.

If you go with new sending unit(s), then check the other sending unit discussion going on here - AC Delco vs. aftermarket brands - $$ vs. reliability?
