Good Engine Stand?
 

I plan to only use this once for my Inline 6 rebuild, http://www.harborfreight.com/750-lb-...and-32915.html

Anyone ever get one of these?

In a word, NO.

We call that a "tippy" stand. Hang your motor on it, try to move the stand, you always do, and BOOM. Engine hits the floor, and hopefully not you! I know. It says "Won't tip over." They lie. Notice that only the cheapest one "Wont' tip over"? That is because it is not an issue with the others.

Get a stand that at least has a "T" at the front and 4 wheels. Better yet, get one that has two legs and 4 wheels.

I have 1000-lb one my self. No issues, but I try to center the block by weight, twice. Once with the heads, and once without the heads. That helps keep things under control when turning the block over.

We've had a "tippy" stand for as long as I can remember and it's never tipped over. It has to be 40+ years old and gone through dozens of engines. ;)

The minimum I would use is the 4 wheel stand. I have used the "tippy" stand before and bought 2 stands with 4 wheels'

Yeah definatly spend the cash for a 4 wheeled model, there is a reason they dont make three wheeled atvs anymore. I like the ones that have two seprate legs instead of the single with two wheels at the end.

The 3 wheel stands are a good way to have a lot of new shiny parts turn into scraped and dented junk. Get a 4 wheel stand. They are safer.

I have a four wheel one. It's your typical crap stand from HF, shucks...ect. I put one of my 455's on it and it leaned so bad that I would not even stand near it unless it was hooked to my hoist as a safety precaution.

I bought the 1000lb one from Harbor Freight. Its the bare minimum I'd say. Because of the casters and rear wheel mounting....its not even supposed to be a "roller" in the way I'd think of a roller...with weight as opposed to w/o it. :lol:

Maybe that's why we never had any problems with that OLD "tippy" stand we have. It would probably hold the truck before thinking about flexing.

It only takes one...

For folks not as confident in their good luck, *never* buy anything other than a 4-wheel stand.

if you're plan is only once to use// i'd not bother with a stand at all, 6cyl are easy enough to build without one. all you need to b able to do is outthink the process

i got the 750lb from hf...by accident. i told the guy get me the 1000lb one, he brings it to the counter, ring it up, i get home and notice the box...750lb. s.o.b....

didnt want to take it back after putting it together, so i used it anyways. i got my 305 on it now, seems ok but it is a little scary. it rolled ok with 2 people pushing it just to be safe. i still dont let the kids go around it though lol

Bolt or weld a "T" to the front, add some steel vertically just clear of the ground and you are good. If the stand starts to tip, the vertical strut will hit and stop the movement. That's what I would do.

i just got the harbor freight #32915 "tippy" stand for $48 before i read this thread.

Now i don't have heads (took them off before putting the block on the stand), intake, water pump etc. so it "seems" ok----i'm working with a little less weight. (small block)

The directions say it's not designed to be moved with a load on it, but again with the lesser weight i'm dealing with it seems ok---moves pretty easily on concrete. i think the key is to keep the floor and wheels clean.

If you can possibly spring for it, yes get at least 4 wheels and those gear driven rotating pieces are nice.

If, however, you are tight on budget AND space AND understand and can accept the safety risk AND only rebuild engines once in a blue moon, then maybe this stand could work. Actually on second thought i can't/don't recommend it. i will say that it is doing it's job though.

This stand takes up even less space than a 4 wheeled folding stand.

Lubricate the wheels and swivels before each use, it will roll much easier. NEVER move the stand without the mounting head pinned, it can and will pull out! I've done it many moons ago to a 400 I was getting ready to install in my GTO. Lucky for me it fell straight down just missing my foot and only ruined the oil pan. I do prefer that four wheeled stand with the separate front legs. The first time you want to use an oil pan under it you'll see why. ;)

UPDATE:

As i roll the engine over more and more, the mounting piece that rotates (not sure what to call it) tends to walk forward. Now, i can't get the safety pin back in.

But other than that, it seems to be doing the job ok.

i'm still hesitant to recommend this stand though.

UPDATE:

You probably already know this, but i've found that if you put a little oil between the adapter "yoke" and the housing it will turn much easier.
