Hypothetical questions
Ok I'm thinking about buying a 68 chevy around the corner from me its a pretty decent truck. Not much rust for a local truck. Cab corners and rockers is all it needs. That I can See its a c30 drw 133" wheelbase. I would want to up date the brakes and stuff like that. Front Drums aren't safe in my opinion. Eventually I would want to turn it into a 4x4.
From what I have read/researched, I could Just swap over to a 4x4 front axle. With a diy4x fgb52 right? and hook up brakes to that and not run a transfer case for a while right? It would be easier to do it this way, because I wouldn't have to find a donor 1 ton to swap over the 2wd stuff. At the same time I would swap over the rear from the same set as the front. I don't need obnoxiously low gears. I realize I wouldn't have 4x4 power but I wouldn't be doing a bunch of parts hunting 2x either. The truck itself is pretty desireable in my opinion. It has a 327,Low miles, not beat to crap, only 3 owners. I would probably end up making it a srw k30. complete with a dana 60 and hydro boost one day. Hopefully hydro boost sooner than later. |

Re: Hypothetical questions
Yep, sounds like that would work. Someone did that with a one ton frame, here.

Re: Hypothetical questions
Yes, you can swap in a 4WD front axle and run it without a transfer case, but it might be a lot more work than you are planning on. Before you lay down any money, find an intact 4WD truck so you can see what the front end looks like, and compare it with the 2WD. You will need to swap the entire suspension all the way up to the spring hangers and also the complete steering setup and the engine mounts.

Re: Hypothetical questions
A lot of work I don't mind I just don't like doing the same basic work 2x.

Re: Hypothetical questions
Save yourself some time and money and find a decent 4x4.

Re: Hypothetical questions
Why would I want to do that? Then I would have the same truck as everyone else? Built not bought!

Re: Hypothetical questions
anyone else?

Re: Hypothetical questions
They are just trying to help. It will take you much longer to convert that to 4x4 when there are 4x4's out there. I am sure you could make it work, but why take the extra time creating one that already exists. You could take that time and "build" your ride nicer. Most of us on here have "built" not bought trucks. Not 2 trucks are the same, so I wouldn't worry about having what everyone else has. That's the beauty of these trucks. Trevor

Re: Hypothetical questions
Exactly, go to a show and find two trucks that are exactly the same. Every owner has their little quirks of what they want in a truck.
Me I would rather spend 30K on my truck than buy a new one from the lot. |
