New Clutch / Throwout Bearing Noise ??
I replaced the clutch and throwout bearing when I did my frame-off resto....I have about 400 miles on it now and am experiencing an intermittent noise sometimes when I activate the clutch......Now, it has only happened a few times and lasted for several minutes each time...
The noise sounds like a light grinding when the clutch is depressed....not sure if it is free spin on the throwout bearing or what?......Does the throwout bearing require grease?....I just lightly greased it when I installed it, thinking that too much grease could be a problem getting on the pressure plate.... Whatever it is does not sound right at all when it happens.....but like I said 90% of the time it's fine with no noise whatsoever....One more note: I did have the clutch over adjusted (too tight) for about 100 miles, not sure if that did any damage?? I would appreciate any insight! RM |

Re: New Clutch / Throwout Bearing Noise ??
I had the same situation, where I had all new clutch parts. But years later I was driving it, once the rest of the truck got put back together.
In my case, the noise sounds like a scratching noise. At first it was loud and obnoxious, now after I have put a few hundred miles on it the noise is not as bad but still there at little. There is no way to lube those bearings, so in yours and my case the grease I think just dried up or something. I just hoped that after driving and the heat created with driving, that the grease would loosen up a little which it has done in my case. Though, with your over adjusted linkage. You could have burned the bearing, since the grease inside it was hardened from sitting. I say run it for a while, and hopefully the noisy bearing will settle down. If not, well - you know what's next. |
Re: New Clutch / Throwout Bearing Noise ??
Typically Throw out bearings will make noise when the clutch is not depressed, and if you lightly push on the clutch pedal it will go away. I am wondering if the pilot bushing is a bit dry? The pi;ot bearing should be an oil light bronze bushing. Hope I spelled that right. Meaning that the bushing is impregnated with oil, and is self oiling. If it sat for sometime while you finished your build it could have become dry. I say drive it and see if it gets better from heat and use. my $.02 worth.. HTH

Re: New Clutch / Throwout Bearing Noise ??
For what it's worth, I just had my clutch replaced a few 100 miles ago. When it was first done, no noise. Then about 200 miles later, it started to make a noise like sand-paper when I lightly depressed the clutch pedal. It's going away now but I can still hear it. I'm hoping it's normal!!
