project Black Betty (bam-A-lam)
finally starting on my '66 short/fleet, Black Betty...i'm attaching a current pic, & i will update as things change...first on the list is suspension upgrades...eventually it will get some typical rust repair & a repaint...just for a little background info, it has a rebuilt "stock" '66 327 w/ 2-speed Powerglide...my plan is to keep it mostly original looking except with a nice drop in altitude....on to the pics:

Re: project Black Betty (bam-A-lam)
me and another board member purchased this '72...it will be donating it's front & rear end to my truck...'72 has a 3.08 gear which will hopefully allow me to cruise a little easier...i will also be adding power brakes & power steering to my '66...the '72 is currently at my dad's place in North MS...so i will be making trips up there to work on the trucks...my dad removed the '72 rear yesterday, so now i have to get it cleaned up...then i'll be taking my truck north for the swap....pics of the '72 donor:

Nice looking truck to start with, Have fun with it.

Re: project Black Betty (bam-A-lam)
Are you planning on air bags or just drop coils? I have some unneeded rear coils. I bought them new but decided to go with air bags so they've never been installed. I think they came from CPP. I remember them being the lowest they offered.

i plan on using 5" drop coils for the rear |
Re: project Black Betty (bam-A-lam)
got the rear end out of the '72...made a trip up this past weekend to clean it up...got it pressure washed & started wire brushing...decided it will probably come out alot cleaner, faster if we just sand blast it...so dad will be trying to borrow one from a friend...i gotta order some rear end parts too before we swap it into the '66

Re: project Black Betty (bam-A-lam)
can anyone verify whether the '66 rear parking/emergency brake cable is the same as a '72? i have an issue with the passenger side cable on the '72 & was hoping to just replace it with the one from my '66....looking at Classic Parts' website, it lists the cable for 66-72...so i would assume it's the same, but i want to make sure
also got rear end parts ordered, & i'll hopefully be able to head up & install in a couple weeks |

thanks...decided not to lower it...rather, i will be leaving it "stock" in appearance but just upgrading the suspension for easier/safer drivability...gonna keep stock steelies & original style hubcaps as well....i also made a vow last week to make this my daily driver...i hate driving my dinky VW Cabriolet  so, once everything is in mechanical order, i will put it on the road more often....getting ready for a move to Charleston, SC this week...the truck will have to make the trip over once it gets done....i smell a road trip for dad ;) |

Re: project Black Betty (bam-A-lam)
and the new parts pictured below...all new stuff (rotors,calipers,bearings/seals,tie rods,upper/lower control arm shafts, idler arm, coil springs) from Carquest, mostly Moog....kept the '66 centerlink, so i got the POL conversion adjuster sleeves to adapt the tie rods...for those not familiar, when going this route, you'll have '66 outer tie rods @ the inner location & '72 outer tie rods @ the outer location...also have a 1 1/4 front sway bar not pictured that will be installed w/ new Energy Suspension greaseable bushings (freebie from friend)

Re: project Black Betty (bam-A-lam)
well, no pics of the progress since i forgot the camera :banghead:, but i was back home over Mother's Day weekend & got some painting done...i painted the spindles, calipers, control arm shafts, sway bar, & such...also got my P/S conversion bracket & steering coupler from Captainfab...also got a new P/S gear box from Advance Auto....only thing i need now is the pressure line/hose & return line/hose...does anyone have suggestions where to get these? from researching, i noticed some people having issues with fitment when purchasing from certain places
also, i purchased a set of factory pulleys and P/S pump & brackets from a forum member...he used the setup on his '70...everything should be correct, as the pulleys are for SBC w/ short WP....however, my dad said the double groove crank pulley isn't aligning with the others...any ideas? here's the setup i have (minus alt. brackets): http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...us/pulleys.jpg |
Re: project Black Betty (bam-A-lam)
also scored this on Craigslist for $100 (retails for $250)!...my plan is to have it clear powdercoated before installing
