Truckin Magazine Replaces C10 Brakes with Baer

5 Attachment(s)
I saw this months tech article which is part of the C10 Buildup Tour.

Truckin replaced the front and rear brakes with Baer disc brakes.

I am curious if anyone else has used this kit & method with any success.
Also, I cannot find pricing information on this system/kit (Baer two-piece 14-inch rotors and the 6P six-piston calipers).
The Baer website just has pictures, no prices...

Here is the article: 1973 Chevy C10 Buildup - The Pickup Fix-Up Tour Part VII: Four-Wheel Disc Brake Conversion For '73-'87 C10s

This seems like a more advanced method as they had to remove the axle from the truck and use a lathe to remove material from the hub...

Quote:

Image 1) This install required the rear axles to be removed, which meant the differential had to be drained.

Image 2) Next, Baer's aluminum adapter was bolted to the rear housing flange using the provided hardware.

Image 3) The center hubs of our axles were about .020 too large to fit inside of the new brake rotor mounting hats, so they were chucked up in the lathe and turned down.

Image 4) Then, the factory brake line tabs on the rear axle tubes were cut off so the brake line could be slightly moved. The lines were reattached to the axle tubes using hose clamps and then the new calipers were installed onto the conversion brackets.

Image 5) Here is a look at the compact PBR caliper and 12-inch rotors installed.

I have looked at the system. The problem I have with it is it's only a 12" rotor with a small PBR caliper. If that's all your after take a look in our Vendor Marketplace. For about half that price you can buy the brackets from Capt Fab and purchase your own rotors, calipers etc.

Another concern is the cost of front brakes to go with it. The matching Baer brakes for the front are much higher than many on the market.

If your looking to go with rear discs and want bigger than 12" rotors, the best bang for the buck is McGaughys system. It still requires the axle to be modified, but you get 13" rotors all around for a LOT less money. Take a look at this thread for more info- Mcgaughys Big Brake Kit

I like the Blackbirds kit; I believe Travis (TVBlazer) used it and I believe a few others on the board has used them and they like. I have spoken with Randy the owner and he seems pretty good to deal with. www.blackbirdscustomtrucks.com

I know Dennis of "Silvers" build thread used their kit and had great things to say about them.

However, I sure wish there was a system that didn't require as much modification...

The kit that Captain Fab offers does not require mods. Blackbirds offers a great kit too, but I prefer Captain Fab because he is a supporting Vendor and he is always on the forum helping his customers.

If you really want a good looking system for minimum outlay take a look at Captain Fab's D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets- LINK

You can run the reasonably priced Wilwood D52 replacement calipers all around. Throw in a set of replacement cross drilled rotors, and you have a really nice 12" system. The beauty of his system is it can be used with OEM components, or after market upgrades.

That's exactly what I'm looking for!

Awesome. I've heard about Captain Fab in a couple other threads so I'm game!

Thanks again N2TRUX.

If you go to the Suspension Forum there are several threads on the topic. Captain Fab actually listened to our members needs and built those brackets due to forum members input. There is an in-depth thread regarding the R&D of those brackets posted there.

I have seen him post around, but I had no idea he has such a clean and awesome setup.

No modification to your truck (cause we don't all have lathes! Stupid Truckin' magazine!) and you can use stock GM parts!
