Location of oil pressure sending unit.
 

Im think i saw the oil pressure sending unit on the passenger side of the block under the exhaust manifold. I just need to be sure.

That is probably a knock sensor on the pass side . The oil pressure switch is usually right at the back of the intake ,behind the distributor on he driver side, or on the drivers side towards the rear of the block.

A Knock Sensor detects detonation and relays the info so that the comp can retard the timing a little .

Sorry, its a 305 i forgot to mention that. I had no idea this thing had a knock sensor, The wire melted onto the exhaust manifold whats this going to cause? The reason i ask about the oil pressure sending unit is i bought a aftermarket gauge set and have to install one of those plastic hardlines, it sounds like this is going to be a pain, is there clearance for fittings and all that?

just put one on my 79 Saturday its located on by the distributor on the drivers side.

Awesome thanks for the info, thats why i love this site. Okay the million dollar question... The last guage i have is the voltometer, how do i wire this in to show my volts?

a volt gauge just needs two wires a positive switched and a ground, are using a factory gauge or after market

Its an aftermarket gauge. My truck came with the idiot lights so im phasing those out right quick.

305 Location of oil pressure sending unit.
The two locations it could be are

1. Top rear of engine next to distributor

2. Bottom drivers side of engine above the oil filter.

The second option is more likely as it was moved to this location on most vehicles in the early to mid 80s

My '86 305 was by the distributor.

Isn't there a threaded plug near the top of the timing cover in the front of the block that could be removed and used for an aftermarket oil pressure gauge? Not sure myself, just thinking aloud. Most SBC have the sending unit/ oil pressure gauge line are located in the top of the block behind the rear of the intake manifold by the distributor on the drivers side of the engine block.

I found the one on top, I will try threading my fittings into that one, thanks for the help guys!

I have an 87 sierra classic, original engine was 305 TBI,
I have pulled it and replaced w/ pre-1980 4bolt main 350. Truck has a gauge not idiot light. I have the location behind the distributor and I have the one just above the oil filter. I want to remove the plug from the above the oil filter, it is very TIGHT!!! what would be best way to remove this plug? I dont have a torch for heat.

My '87 wiring harness for the gauge is a single tan wire on the driver side that plugs into the single spade clip on the sender above the oil filter. So I need to really remove this plug. I just dont want to break it off. I sprayed lubricant, hopefully it will loosen up.

I'd just put the sender behind the distributor....no issues.....if the plug is that tight I'd leave it alone...without the proper tools
