engine stands

Has anyone used 6 cyl. engine stands on their LS Swap? I have an LQ4 that is going into my '67, but I traded out the whole front suspension with an '89 Suburban and I would be grateful for any info you might have.

Re: engine stands

I tried to use the stock SBC perches on my 65 and I could get them to work, however the exhaust manifolds would not fit, I tried the stock truck ones, the F-body ones, even some shortie headers from Sanderson, none worked. I eventually just bought some perches from POL they move the engine up about an inch or so and the headers fit perfectly.

Just to clarify.... you are running the 89 Burb crossmember and suspension with the 67 6cyl stands?

When using the 67-72 6 cyl stands with a V8, the engine would sit back farther than if using the V8 stands. So using the following adapter plates should put the LS in a good spot. Although I am trying to picture it in my head if this would put the LS in the same position that the V8 would be with 6 cyl stands......

Yes, I swapped the complete crossmembera and suspension from the Burb, and now I am trying to get my head around if the "6 Cyl" perch idea will work with the LQ4. I don't know if there are major differences with the '89 crossmember over the '67. I know that I only had to drill two holes for it to bolt up. Thanks for the info on the plate. I looked at your build thread and saw that you had to do a little fab work for everything to work out. Nice build though!!

Actually Clyde, I have been following your exhaust manifold search. Glad you found a solution. I may have to do the same but I am hopeful to keep the motor as far back as possible.

Re: engine stands

Thanks! The only reason I did the fab work that I did on the passenger side plate was to allow me to run the 5.3's AC compressor in it's stock location. Basically, I had to move the engine mount on the block back, which resulted in me making a plate that was the dims of the one I posted above. That meant I had to weld a short extension to the stand so that the rubber mount could now bolt on to it since it was moved back.

These mounts will set the engine farther forward (measured at the bellhousing flange) by approximately 3" on V8 stands:

These mounts will set the engine farther forward (measured at the bellhousing flange) by approximately 1.25" on V8 stands:

Re: engine stands

The POL perches I used can mount the engine in the front or rear two holes, which ever you need. I used Sanderson Shortie CSLS1 headers and they are nice and affordable. However DT has some available with long tube. When I did mine, there wasnt much info on doing a 63-66 although I know the 67-72 frames are very similar, they arent exactly alike.

I used the rear holes so my electric fans had plenty of room

Re: engine stands

Herre are a couple of diagrams that might help. The first is a comparison of the LS mounting bosses on the block, and the SBC/BBC mounting bosses.

This one will give you an idea of which plate to use depending on how far forward or back you want the LS engine to sit. All measurements are based off of the location of a SBC bellhousing flange on the block in the stock, original location.

That is some good info guys, thanks!

Re: engine stands

When using the above drawings, keep in mind that the 6 cyl stands will set the SBC back farther that the V8 stands will. How much though... I'm not sure.

Do you have any dims on the #1 mount above?

Give me a little bit and I will draw them up.

You can use this and get an idea.

Re: engine stands

RocketKing, did you ever work out how far back you could set the lsx? I have a 67 with a 350/700r4 on 6 cyl stands and I'm swapping in a 5.3/4L60E. The newer 4L60E is .40" longer than the 700r4.

EDITED for bad info! The newer 4l60e is actually longer than the 700r4 NOT shorter.

Thanks,
Jay

Re: engine stands

I used the 6 cyl stands with the #2 plate but due to the AC compressor hanging low on the passenger side, I had to modify to engine stand on that side. Take a look on my build thread, my last post shows the mod and fit.
I do not have the cab on my frame yet but this is the application that will bring it closest to the firewall IMHO.

Hope this helps.

The gen 1 sb sets back 3 1/2" if set in on the I6 250 stands(give or take 1/8")...:chevy: crazyAl

Re: engine stands

I had mine on 6cyl stands w/stock motor mount....it places the motor right against the firewall...depending on LSx plates used with it. I wanted mine back...but not so far back that I couldn't relocate the coil packs behind the heads later.
