Breather/oil-fill tube in later-style intake

Has anyone ever done this? it's a 74-76 model cast iron 4-barrel SBC and i want the old school look with script valve covers and breather tube.

it looks like it would work but i'd like to know if anyone else has done it and what i should expect.

i already have the double humps and valve covers.

thanks

Hmm and you wanna run the later style intake?..I think you'd have to get an aftermarket intake (performer eps has an oil filler on the intake), you could MAYBE cut a hole in the intake you have but I doubt it...

post a pic when you get it all done, i love that look!

why not get an older model junkyard intake with the filler on the intake
?...

it can b done what you can expect is heavy sludge buildup inside the engine as well as leakage of oil out the engine // just like the old ones were

Why do they still sell em then?...(not argueing just wondering..)

I have a 1968 intake off a 327 on my 350. It has the twist on non-breather oil fill cap & tube and uses a PCV valve and breather on the valve covers.

cdowns is right, PCV makes things stay a lot cleaner. I've seen where some people have added holes to the back ends of those script valve covers for the breather & PCV valve.

yeah ive seen where you run a breather pcv on the backs also..

I would never run a vehicle without PCV.

X2. I ran breathers only on a 350. My oil turned to sludge, which might have been the cause of a rod going through my oil pan.

yea i'm still gonna run a pcv valve but i just want the old-style look.

someone has already cut a hole in one of the covers (i wish it was in the back) and they have breathers on them too.

will an HEI dizzy work on the old intakes? i was gonna buy an old edelbrock cb3-x (i think) with the breather tube but i found out the HEI would hit it.

i want it old-style but not with a points dizzy.

here are the covers.

oil runs down// do ya think havin a breather on the bottom of a valve cover is a well thought out approach or a major leaky on the headers??

plenty of manufacturers have HEI dizzys with small caps and external coil to reproduce the original look and fit

i hadn't really thought about the them leaking.

i think they should be alright though.

has anyone else ever had problems with them?

the holes are about mid-way and the breathers have a 90 bend in them. they seal to the covers with a gasket.

Did you get them for a good deal? That might be why. They look like you would have a problem with leaking like cdowns said...and right onto the exhaust manifold. Darn.

I did this on my Model A that runs a '70 Chevy 350 SBC and old aluminum "corvette" valve covers. I had an Eldebrock RPM intake machined to use the old intake style filler tube and then put a breather on it. The RPM intake had the boss there, just needed the hole machine for it.

I found out the hard way that the crankcase needed more room to breathe. On a new engine that isn't broken in, or on an old engine that has a lot of blow by thi will be an even bigger problem. In my case, with a newly rebuilt engine, I blew out the manual Holley gas pump gaskets and spewed oil all over the headers, thought I had blown up the engine! Luckily I rebuilt the fuel pump and all was good.

I changed the oil filler neck to the type that is used on a '66-67 vette, it is equipped with a PCV Valve fitting. I also added a Moon breather in drivers side "vette" valve cover.

It has worked fine since these modifications.

I hope this helps.

thanks lakeroadster.

that's a nice ride you have there and i may wind up doing something similar to your set-up.

Re: Breather/oil-fill tube in later-style intake

i used the corvette covers uncut , breather on front of intake, cut hole for pcv in back of intake (old single plane edelbrock) and ran pcv from back to hole at plenum. keeps oil mes down , but pcv is sucking to much oil from lifter valley , have to figure out a better baffle.Hope this helps
