HEI Distributor

What is the best way to test the HEI Distributor to make sure everything is working properly? Reason I ask this, during all of the robbing of parts my nephew did, I think he swapped distributors on me. Is it possibly the gears are worn out? It's just not acting right. Doesn't seem to be getting the right amount of fire to the plugs, has a new rotary cap, and button, coil. well all new inside Just can't get it to time right. You can set it, and next time you start it it's off again. That's why I'm thinking maybe the gears are worn out. O it has a new timing chain and cam. Well, not new, but a couple of years old. Everything was working fine, before parts were stripped What would be a good cheap replacement for a 81 GMC Sierra Grande 305 SBC

Does your distributor have 4 wires coming out of the back going to a plug in the engine compartment? The wires should be going into the firewall on the passenger side.

Thanks to this site i learned there was a spark control module on my truck, it seemed to be causing me timing problems. I was just wondering if your truck possibly had one.

Its still most likely your problem. It can change the timing. Your best bet is to just bypass it. They didnt work right when they were new. The aftermarket ones never work right. Just unplug it from the distributor and splice the green and black wires. Your esc distributor will now function like a normal hei.

No body mentions to leave it unplugged after you splice it haha. I plugged mine back in and drove it a while, now im having some similar problems with my distributor.

Re: HEI Distributor

Yup and then just leave it unplugged. After you do that you will be able to set your timing and it wont move.
