switching from manual to auto ???

hey I am debating switching my '68 3 spd manual to an auto trans. I get the steering column and obvious changes. But is it a really hard switch? I have the knowledge and the ability being I am a tech. Any help is much appreciated. thanks guys!

It's not too difficuilt. I just converted my panel from 3 speed to auto.

just need an auto crossmember, auto flywheel, auto trans, and depending on the trans you may need to modify the driveshaft.

the manual crossmember needs to be cut out of the truck, and if you want column shift you need to swap the steering columns.

aside from that you just run the tranny cooler lines, and shift linkage and you should be good to go

Sublvr72 hit it on the head. when i did my 71 4-speed to a th400
i bought two after market crossmembers that just didnt fit. i had to make one and i waisted all that money. try to get a stock auto crossmember. good luck

You will also need to modify your radiator. One of the tanks will need to be switched with one with trans cooler input/output for the trans cooler lines. Someone might have mentioned this previously and I missed it.

Re: switching from manual to auto ???

Sublvr72 provided some good info, I just wanted to provide an option regarding the steering column/column shift. I switched my 3 on the tree to an automatic and used a kit that provides the shift indicators (3 or 4 speed, the acrylic ones are the cheapest and available from Summit and Jegs) and adapter linkage (threaded rod and links) so you can use your existing column. Napa and/or most auto parts store sell these parts too.

A longer speedo cable. Also is it a L6 or V8 ? You'll need the auto linkage from the trans to the steering colume to be for a 6 or 8. I used a 350 auto trans from a V8 2wd 72 Blazer and it's linkage on my 67 L6. Everything fit right but had to find and use a L6 auto linkage , it's longer with a slight ben about six inches at the top from a 68 Chev truck. If you have a V8 well use the auto linkage for that. Also the bracket for the kickdown L6 or V8 is needed.

Also, you may need to remove the pilot bushing from the end of the crankshaft.
