283 from a chevyII for my 66 stepside

I bought 66 stepside no motor no trans already has a good 12 bolt rear end in it.i found a guy that has a 283 from a chevyII.the stock 283 produces 275 horse.would this be a good transplant or hold out for a 350 engine.thinking i could add a cam headers, carb for better performance.the guy says the motor is tight but doesn"t know the milage assumes it is low.any ideas guys thanks

if it is reasonable, then cool. I would pull the dipstick look for burned oil and smell, also pull a valve cover and look at that, see if there is any gunk caked in the cover or head, any of that, I would consider that all before I bought it.
