please help Is my truck a 1972 cheyenne super or a clone
3 Attachment(s)
I have a 1972 cheyenne super 4x4 and I was looking at other trucks and something caught my eye. It has a/c but not the two vents on the outside of the dash just the middle one. it has A/C controls in the dash. So did all the 1972 cheyenne supers come with a/c? Do you think this is not a true cheyenne super? Did somome add the middle vent? I still love the truck just wanted a little more info.

A/C was an option on all of the trucks. I find it odd that your truck is missing the corner dash vents though. I haven't seen one like that. I wonder if someone filled those holes. WES

can you get a pic of the option list inside of the glove box door? regardless of what it might be, that's my all time favorite 67-72 truck combos. 4x, black, lwb. nice......

there is no sheet anywhere. I can get the vin thats about as good as I can do. It does not look like any holes have been filled on the dash not sure.

might look and see if the dash has been replaced... cheyenne is really a trim option,i would think it would be very hard to `prove` its a factory cheyenne with only the vin.. wheres Andy at??

Re: please help Is my truck a 1972 cheyenne super or a clone
Yeah, there is no way to prove that your truck isn't a Cheyenne Super without a spid sticker. I bet someone added the a/c or that they swapped dashes on your truck. You might check for a headliner. Those were mandatory on Cheyennes/ Cheyenne Supers. The door panels should have woodgrain on them but that could have simply been taken off. My guess is that it could have been, but probably wasn't if the spid sticker is missing. Just my 2 cents. Nice truck though, and even it is was/wasn't, it is still a great truck to own. Trevor

Two of the harder things to clone are the rear cargo light, and the headliner with trim. Does your truck have those?

Re: please help Is my truck a 1972 cheyenne super or a clone
all this info is correct. Without the SPID intact, about the only thing you can do is look over all the super parts and see if they are all there. A couple missing (like bright trim on the tailgate handle) is no big deal, most of those fell off in the 70's. But the headliner was ONLY avalible in CST and cheyenne/super.
If the paint is original, or a low effort respray, then you may be able to see chalk markings on the back of the cab between the cab and bed, and also on the firewall with the option number. YE9 is what you should see, or maybe Z84 |
Re: please help Is my truck a 1972 cheyenne super or a clone
What was the difference between the Cheyenne and the Cheyenne super. I have a 71 with Cheyenne badges not Cheyenne Super. I do have the CST option.

It's a shot in the dark, but look at the backside and underside of the seat for a build sheet.

Re: please help Is my truck a 1972 cheyenne super or a clone
Cheyenne replaced CST in 71 and many 71 cheyennes are listed as z84 custom sport trunk instead of the cheyenne. In april of 71, the super was released and had a few more items added to the option list above a regular cheyenne- woodgrained interior treatment on instrument panel and glovebox door, special cheyenne super badges on glove box and fenders, chrome tailgate handle in 71, stainless cover in 72, specific cloth interior (houndstooth) only on bench seat trucks- buckets were only available in vinyl PO1full wheel covers and upper and lower trim. This was sold under RPO YE9 Cheyenne Super or if St Louis Plant (I think) Cheyenne Super Sport. Hope this clears it up for you Turner 72

full guages were standard on the super also. (not including tach)

Re: please help Is my truck a 1972 cheyenne super or a clone
My truck had no side vents for AC when I bought it but had the center vent, I felt around behind the dash and found that someone had tack welded some sheet metal and used Bondo to fill the AC holes, I cut the tack welds and bought new AC ball vents and mounted them in the dash. Maybe someone fillled your AC holes as well?

Re: please help Is my truck a 1972 cheyenne super or a clone
I took my seat out last weekend and found the original build sheet in the back of it. My truck has the YE9 on the sheet and it states it was bought and sold here in town at Bud Eyre Chevrolet. I was really suprised to have found the build sheet.

Re: please help Is my truck a 1972 cheyenne super or a clone
The only thing I see that stands out is the lack of woodgrain on the door panels. It seems like the metal woodgrain door inserts for the 72 are kinda hard to come by. Most of the repro 72 door panels I've seen indicate that they aren't compatible with the woodgrain inserts, so maybe they were just replaced?
Side note... With such a conveniently placed, reliable tag like a SPID, why on earth did anyone ever remove them?!?! I wish the old 60's Chevy cars had the same thing! |
