Axle wear question - need help.

Started my 12 bolt posi rebuild and noticed on 1 axle that there is significant ware between the C-Clip to about a 1/8 inch to the end of the axle. You can feel a big lip on the end of that axle. There is a noticeable difference between the worn area and the end of the axle. The other side is smooth from the clip notch right to the end of the axle. I can purchase another axle but what would cause this type wear? I don't want to install a new axle without knowing if something else is wrong.
Any ideas would be helpful. If a pic would help if my description is not good enough let me know.
Thanks

Re: Axle wear question - need help.

That kind of wear is caused by a continuous end load on the shaft, such as you might get when cornering, but in normal driving the end load wouldn't be continuous. It would have to be some kind of use like circle track racing.

Just a long shot here: Did you check to make sure both tires are the same diameter?

Re: Axle wear question - need help.

Ray, I'll check and compare the two axles tonight. If thats the case I wouldn't mind just replacing the outer bearings and seals and that axle. Thanks, I'll post my findings after I get home and check. From the looks of the rear they have never been removed.

Both tires are the same 16.5 or at lease whats on the truck now.
