dash lights ????
Ok, my man took the old dash out and put the tach dash in the truck and when he starts it all the dash lights come on. I bought this tach dash and I never had it apart but I don't know if it was torn apart before I got it. Any ideas on what could be wrong? Thanks Randy

Is the headlight switch turned on?

All of them?? if somebody took it apart before, they might've put a different circuit board in it, causing to have all of the lights come on. Paul.

Thats what he told me all the lights come on when he starts it. I have the other dash that came out of it I might have to tear it apart and put the tach in it. Is that possible? Thanks Randy

Sounds like a wire is swapped on the main plug that feeds your dash printed circuit.
Trace the paths on the printed circuit to find out which one feeds the lights. Don't confuse it with the common ground shared by all of the dash parts. Make sure the + feed isn't somehow cross-connected to the tachometer. :gmc: |
I wonder since I don't have original tach wiring for it could he somehow of wired it hot to the wrong source? He was going to run a hot wire and a wire to the HEI. As you can tell I don't know what he did for sure but I just didn't want to pay him a bunch to figure it out. Thanks Randy

The wires that go to the tach are completey seperate from the lighting for the dash, now that I think about it my early thought of the light switch being on wouldnt be a possiblity because it would stay on constantly, not just with the key being on. Maybe the harness plug for the cluster was put in the wrong way???? It is keyed but who knows it might be possible

Did he have the idiot light system before? The plug wiring is different for those speedo-fuel only dashes. You may want to ask him.
I don't think it's a big deal to change it if that's the case. I remember seeing a post on the board about it a while back. |
It had the dash with guages before. I might just have to drive it with the lights on in the dash all the time. ;)

Lights OUT
I would look at the back of the circuit board and see if all the tabs are good and not touching any of the other ones.Check and see if they are not broken are torn any place. As far as the tach is concerned it has it's own wires coming off the back of the dash. If you want to swap the tach to the old dash all you have to do is interchange the dash peices that you need. The only thing is the tach circuit board and non tach are different. The tach board is cut out around the tach where the non tach isn't. I would think it's in the board some place. Hope this helps.
