Tips for chosing a Magnaflow Exhaust Wanted
 

Hi,

I searched this site in the 88 - 98 category and didn't see anything specific on this topic so I started this thread.

I need some tips on chosing a Magnaflow exhaust system --- its booked to be installed this Thursday so early replies are very appreciated. Mangaflow is what the shop I want to use serlls so I'm limited to just that or a no-name house brand.

This is what I have that pushes air through so far:

1998 Chev 5.7L (350) engine
Volant Cool Air Intake
Granatelli Mass Flow Air Sensor
Edlebrock Shorty Headers

This is what I'm thinking:

Cut out the cats & buy cheater sensors
True dual exhaust
Replace everthing from headers back
Magnafllow mufflers or one muffler with 'x' pipe
Stainless Steel Tail pipes
Exit out the back under the roll pan

Now, I have a Flowmaster 50 series on my other truck, I like the sound of it but I want something a bit more throaty on this truck.

It currently has dual Cherry Bombs & 2.25" pipe. I like the way it idles, but not the "rapping" noise it makes when you punch it....sounds a bit too bush league for me.

What have other people done & liked or hated with their Magnaflow systems?

I searched Youtube and didn't see alot of videos that you can listen to very well.

Any info is appreciated!

Personally i would go with dual flowmaster 40,thats what i have on mine with no cats, and no y pipe. magnaflows are real quiet from my experience, but they are smooth sounding throughout the entire rpm range.

I kinda like that "bush league" sound. Then, I'm probably older than you and recall with fond memory the dual Smitty's that were on my '54 Ford/V8/Stick when I was a senior in high school in the fall of '64. Loved listening to them rap as I wound it up and let off of the gas.

But, the best rapping sound came from my '60 TR-3, that only had a '66 Pontiac resonator for a muffler. Tip of muffler turned down and all that sound echoed off of the the pavement. Watched some department store windows vibrate as I wound it up....and let off.

i have a 93 5.7 no cats and duals with the magnaflow muffler that is dual in dual out that is pretty much just a x pipe wraped with the same stuff as a glasspack. it sounds good at low to mid throttle but after that it kinda sounds like a glasspack. i dont really care for that part but like the ideal of only having to buy one muffler instead of two. saved some money

I have this Magnaflow on my daughter's '94 GMC.

but rapping is good! ;)

I currently have a single magnaflo on my 2000 GMC with dual tails. It's alright but not what I was looking for. I'll be heading back to some packs for it soon.

I have one of their larger mufflers on my Suburban, it's really mild. I'd use two of their oval-cased mufflers. Those are much more mellow.

Thanks Bruiser! I went with these in my truck. It sounds way better and they are a good balance between throaty when I step on it and nice and mellow cruising on the hi-way.

Gordon does yours have much incab drone with that system? Especially between 1600 & 2000 rpm?

It's not bad at all (compared to the cherry bombs that were on it before).

At about 2000 rpm in overdrive its about 60 mph. I can definitely hear the mufflers but they don't sound tin-ny. I'm going to put in sound deadener in the cab in the next week or so to cut down the road noise.

Glad you like them, Gordon. Magnaflows are my new favorites.

Jim, everyone says the Magnaflows are drone free. I've got one of their biggest on my Burb and it does have a small drone around 1700 rpm or so, but only if you're on the gas accelerating semi-agressively. With the cruise on it's fine. And I never hear it when my wife drives the truck. I think it has more to do with the body of the truck being like riding in a big drum. I had one of their smaller mufflers installed on my daughter,s 94 and even pulled the cats. It has a nice mellow growl on acceleration only but is also quiet at cruise and has no drone.

That said, I wouldn't change a thing about my Suburbans exhaust and I'd put the same muffler on my wifes Yukon if she'd let me.;)

Morning John. Maybe it's just the length of my my muff that makes for the droning. I haven't the time or spare change to experiment with different muffs so I plan on going back to the dual packs and chevelle tips like I ran on my 88 and loved so well. That will do it for me.
Many years ago I ran factory Hemi muffs on my trucks. Sure liked them. Plenty of bark when you stomp the pedal but idled like Mom's Olds ya know. ;)

Jim, they really are the "new" glasspacks. I had my share of glasspacks back when, but all of them always 'broke up' at higher rpm and got that 'blatty' sound. Magnaflows are straight-through mufflers just like the glasspacks but they keep the deep throaty tone throughout the rpm range.

Kind of off topic but what are the "cheater" O2 sensors??

They are a item that plugs in where the O2 sensor plugs into the wiring harness, and tells the computer what it wants to see. This is usually done when someone removes their catalytic converters. That way the computer thinks the exhaust has the correct readings, and no CEL.
