Scam?
Well I thought I hit the jack pot the other day. I was looking through Autotrader.com and found a 2007 Chevy Silverado 2500 Duramax LTZ with 46,000 miles for sale by owner. He was asking $14,800 for it. I thought these truck sold for around $36,000-$40,000? I immediately thought it was a scam, but a little voice in the back of my head said "email him" so I did. That was on Saturday. Sunday I got to looking at the truck again and found the guys phone number so I called it. It was disconnected. I recieved an email from him on Monday morning. He said he still had the truck and the reason he was selling was because he needed money urgently. He sent more pics of it as well. Here is a link to the pics.
http://www.use.com/8e80f7c4ef4be8c7c118#photo=1 I thought maybe he was in an urgent need for money since his phone was disconnected. I wrote back and told him I was interested and I would like to come and see the truck and asked him where it was located. I looked at Autotrader.com again and I could not find the truck anymore. He wrote back and said that it is located in Davidsonville, MD. He said if I was interested he needed to know so that he could stop negotiating with potential buyers. He said that he was firm on the price and test driving would be hard to do cause of its location and he is limited on time. He said he would ship it FREE to me using a vehicle purchase protection program offered through ebay. He said I would have a 5 day inspection period, the shipping company is created by Dependable Auto Shippers, and the truck would be shipped by container directly to my door with the title, clear bill of sale and owners manual. The way I see this I would send him my money and never see the truck. I wrote him back and said that I would not send the money without physically seeing or driving the truck. I said that I would bring the money in hand to him and I would work around his schedule. I also told him that I was having a hard time believing this wasn't a scam. I have not got a response from him yet. What do you guys think? Scam or not? Has anyone seen this ad in Autotrader.com? |
Re: Scam?
I think he left out the part stating 14,800 plus take over payments!!! it seems fishy for certain

Re: Scam?
It's a standard scam. Get your money on promise of shipping the vehicle then never sends it as he doesn't own it at all its pictures he took off of another website somewhere...

Re: Scam?
SCAM. MY buddy was looking at an Eclipse. Same thing guy said send the money and I will send you the car. He never sent the money. Told the guy he did. Guy said car is on the way. Guess what no car ever showed up.
If the guy gets back to youI could go buy and look at teh truck for you |
Re: Scam?
HAHA. The moron wrote back. I'll let everyone read the last email I sent and the last one he sent.
My email: "Hi, I am very interested in your truck. I would like to see the truck and test drive it before I purchase it. I could bring the payment with me. I'm not sending any money until I physically see the truck. You wouldn't have to worry about any shipping cause I could take it with me when I pay for it. I could work around your schedule. I checked and your location is about 5 hrs from me. I don't mind to drive there to look at it. How could you ship that vehicle for free? It seems to me like a bigger hassle for you to ship it than it would for me of bring it back here. You say that I would have a five day inspection period. If I decide the truck is not what I want, do I have to pay to ship it back to you? Then what would happen to the money I sent you? You said the $14,800 is non negotiable. You also said you are negotiating with potential buyers. If you need the money that urgent you could have sold it already. I am having a difficult time believing this is a real deal and not a scam. If you have had someone look at it already they would have purchased that truck for that price unless there is something majorly wrong with it. If something seems to good to be true it usually is." His reply: "I would be glad to meet with you but my job is not offering me this chance..Because of my job I am traveling a lot and I can not stay home and expect to meet potential client. That is why I've choose the internet way to sell it. If you decide to buy the car here is how the process works: First i need your full name (and i need your real name because this is the name i will use for the transfer of the title and bills of sale ) and your shipping address (where do you want to receive the car) After you will give me your information i will forward it to ebay and will start the transaction with eBay Motors. You will receive a notification (invoice) from ebay shortly after that, with all the instructions how to complete the deal. Payment - The payment will be made only by bank to bank wire transfer in US .After you receive the invoice you will have to make the payment to eBay bank account ( NOT to me ), money will be held by them until you receive the car , inspect it and test drive it. If for some reason the car is not exactly as I described to you ( as you see it in the pics ) you will get a full refund from eBay account anytime. Inspection - The 5 days inspection period will start from the day you get the car at your door .The car is insured ,you can drive it , go to any local service or dealership to make sure everything is ok with the it. After the inspection period is over you will have to contact eBay with you decision if you buy the car or not. If you decide to buy it , eBay will release your money to my account. In case for some reason you decided not to keep the car ( it will not be our case here , since the car is great and I'm sure you'll fall in love with it ! ) you will have to inform eBay and they will refund your money and the car will be shipped back to me on my expense. Documents -The car will be delivered with all the papers and documents(clear title, bills of sale, car's manual). The clear title and the bill of sale will both be signed and they will be shipped together with the car. Also this car will arrive with all the documentations required for registration and 2x keys. Shipping Company -Shipping is my part and will be free,as soon as i will have the confirmation from eBay that the funds have been deposited to their account, i will immediately contact the shipping company regarding the delivery arrangements so you get the car in maximum 3-4 days. The car will be shipped crated by DAS Auto Shippers, will be delivered by container directly at your door, this is a door to door delivery service, so the car will arrive at your address, you won't have to worry about picking it up from a dock. If have the money available get back to me with your full name and shipping address so we can move forward . Let me know if you have any questions regarding our transaction. Best Regards" |

I had a friend that was looking at a Titan on eBay. It was a very similar scam. He was in Iraq fixin to head home and wanted to pick it up on his way back to Texas. Same lies. He wanted the money and the truck would be shipped free. My buddy contacted eBay about the process the seller wanted him to follow and eBay more or less told him to stay away from it and wanted to look at the ad closer. They replied a day or so later and told him it was a scam and they had found 100 plus users set up from the same location (Nigeria), and 1000 plus ads posted from these "users". |

The worse part is that people fall for this crap all the time...

Re: Scam?
Craigslist cracked down on this and a few other scams recently. I guess they jsut "moved" to eBay again.
Have you checked this out with eBay or looked up the "shipping" company (Why ship in a container at all if it is in US? They expose vehicles to more damage than a closed trailer behind a semi) to see if it exists? Keep in mind there's a few "ghost" transportation companies being investigated "in" Texas right now (not sure why Texas, but that's where they "are"). |
Re: Scam?
I saw one this morning.
My friend is selling a old Jeep on ebay. It sold the first time in 9 minutes. I told him to look at the guys user rating. The guy didn't have a user rating. This morning my friend gets an email, That looks like a Paypal pending receipt, But it's $500 too much. And, It says the funds will be released, As soon as he sends the extra $500 to a western union address. He also got a fake Ebay email, Saying payment has been sent. In short, I showed him how to stop the scam. Had him report it to ebay, Cancel the sale, And relist the item. The sad thing is. That little is done to catch these people. Spike:smoke: |
Re: Scam?
My neighbor totally fell for this scam. He comes over to tell me he just bought a $75k classic Corvette for $13k. The ad was listed in San Antonio, the car was in Florida and he wired the money to a GA bank. I saw him just after he wired the money. If only he had talked to me first.
