Air Cleaner Intake Hose and Clamps

Where can I get the intake hose that goes from the air cleaner to the front grill opening, along with the appropriate clamps?

Re: Air Cleaner Intake Hose and Clamps

Clamps? Some of them have clamps? Can't say I've seen those intake ducts in the LMC catalog. See them by the dozens in the junk yards though.

The ones I can remember, 84 and up, the duct is just plastic and is sort of a pressure fit on the air cleaner and the piece on the core support.

Re: Air Cleaner Intake Hose and Clamps

i just looked not in LMC catalog the one we had on ours before we changed air cleaners was like a fold over clamp. If memory serves me right, you can buy the duct hose itself at a local auto parts store, or the junkyards, as Randy suggested.

Re: Air Cleaner Intake Hose and Clamps

Local parts stores - nope. Just dumb looks
Local junkyards - nope. All rubber parts missing or fried from AZ heat.
LMC - nope.
Classic Parts - nope.
Rock Auto - nope.

I still have the round plastic sleeve that fits in the core support, and the stock air cleaner, but nothing in between. Any hose like this will not last in AZ heat, so I don't know why they are not a standard replacement part.

What year is your truck? I'm looking at the stuff on Mitchell, and it is showing still available from GM actually. This is the pic it gives while viewing for an 87 1/2 ton. #6 ($24.10 list) is your duct from air cleaner to support, and #10 ($9.08 list) is your piece on the support it connects to. #9 is for an 89-91 Suburban/K5 Blazer, 8 and 7 I have never seen on a truck I've owned. There are no "clamps", they just fit together and have nubs that keep them in place. It gives no part numbers, but just the "ORDER FROM DEALER" that I get a lot on the older stuff, but it does not have the dreaded (d) by it which means discontinued.

I know fleabay has them, I just didn't post the link, and I have bought those at the local dealership and parts stores. Maybe it's just his area. Seems that you are right about just sliding on top. I was thinking Ford.

Thanks Randy. My truck is an 83 C20, 454. Local dealer just laughs at me - too old a vehicle. Ebay and internet has a lot of hoses, just not my 83/C20 454. As ususal, you can get everything for every square EXCEPT my 83.

If it's that hard to find, I would fab one out of dryer vent hose.

Re: Air Cleaner Intake Hose and Clamps

The big block is the issue, I bet yours is the "heavy duty" one with more pieces, Mitchell does show those to be all discontinued. I would try to get you some part #'s, but my GM guy is on vacation and I really don't know any of the other parts guys in there. I'll poke around though.

Re: Air Cleaner Intake Hose and Clamps

Thanks guys. I would not use dryer vent hose, even painted black. I suspect that the OEM hose has a formed end that attaches to the core support. Just want the right part for the job - everything else is stock.

Re: Air Cleaner Intake Hose and Clamps

The standard duty one might fit, just looks like it has extra outlets for some reason, not even sure where they go since I've never owned a big block square. If you were close to me, you could come by and we'd try the standard duct I have that I saved from my 87 1/2 ton. I'd almost bet it would work, but can not be for certain on that.
It shows the air cleaner is the same no matter what motor, so I'd really lean towards it working, and they are available from GM. Just tell them 87 1/2 ton with a 350 and see if they change their mind about it being available or not.

I'm looking for one also for my 83, this pic is from a couple of years ago, it's in worse shape now so I took it off :waah:

Neither would I use one. It was a suggestion. Temporary fix until you could locate the part. But I did see some on Advance Auto website. The pic I posted above is a 305. It looks similar.

Dug my extra one out, there is a part # on it (no mine is not for sale). Maybe if you run a GM # by them you'll get lucky at a big dealership.

#15538408

*edit*
That is a good part #, it is no longer available from GM, but Vintage Parts (in WI) has a ton of them, so the dealer told me. I google'd them, http://vpartsinc.com/

Maybe the got the one for the 454 as well, I just have no way of getting a part # for it. Might be worth a call though.

Ran the part # 14024595 that's on my duct tube on the vpartsinc website and it says they have 73 ??? :smoke:

72 after you hit "add to cart" or whatever they have for a point of sales.

Did it give a price?

Re: Air Cleaner Intake Hose and Clamps

Thanks for the excellent research. Do your stock hoses have a 4" opening on the round end, and about 5.25" across the flat where it connects to the air cleaner, and about 24" long?

Randy: is your part number for a small block?

PS that site would be even better with pictures

Thanks guys, I have been keeping up with this post because I needed the same part mine looked even worse than Malo83's did when I took mine off. I plan to order the part when I get home (dont have my visa or mastercard with me right now) Thanks again RandyP for all your hard working in researching this, and I love that vintage parts website.

Mine is a 1987 R10 with a factory 350.

The round opening on mine is 4", the oval opening is 5 1/2", over all length is 30", length of the ribbed (long) portion is about 22".

The one off my 89 Suburban is about the same, except its overall length is probably 2 or 3" shorter since it has a different hookup on the core support.

tucsonjwt 09-02-2010 11:41 AM

Re: Air Cleaner Intake Hose and Clamps

malo 83 - can you provide the round end diameter, the oval end diameter, and the total length of your part # 14024595 hose? Since you also have an 83, it might be the closest part number to my big block 83.
Randy, 30" seems a bit long. When you say the Suburban hose has a different hookup at the core support, what would be the difference?
BTW, vintage parts does not look up part numbers, but I did get a nice response from them to my inquiry:
"I am sorry all I can do is look up inventory by part number. We are a large warehouse for over 70 different companies. We do not have any technical support, part books, catalogs, pictures or prints of our inventory. We have NO make, model, year or vin# in our data base, we only have part# & description. Maybe an authorized dealership can help you with part numbers."

Refer to post #7 where I hat attached a photo of the Mitchell book, #9 is what is on my 1989 Suburban (350tbi) at the core support, and #10 is what my 1987 (350tbi) truck had on the core support, both where the air duct hooked on.

The duct on the suburban measures about 26" roughly in over all length, it is installed on my truck right now but I could take it off and look for a part # if you want. Looks like that vintage parts site only lets you input a GM part # to search their inventory, you'd probably have to call a GM dealer parts dept and get them to pony up the part # even though it is unavailable through them.

Photo 1 shows the hookup on the core support for my 1987 truck, photo 2 shows the hookup on the core support for my 1989 suburban. We put the core support from the suburban on my truck, to do the infamous "updated" look for the headlamps/grille. Photo 3 and 4 show the suburban duct installed etc.

Randy - thanks for your continued support on this issue.
Either way, it looks like both ducts have a 4" diameter round end going inside a 4" round opening at the core support - correct? At first I thought you might be talking about a completely different style of end at the core support.
Here is a picture of my core support attachment. It is just an "insert and turn" tabbed fitting, not bolted on like yours, but the concept appears to be the same. I have my dual start battery cables running through the opening, until I find a correct air duct (might as well get some use out of it;))
