Cant tell much from that angle, except that it might be a car transmission (from the bolt holding it to the bellhousing). What year is the truck and how many bolts hold the side cover on?

What is the transmission doing (or not doing) that makes it necessary to identify it?

yea sorry bout the angle, i was layin on concrete hott enough to fry an egg on. i tried to look up the casting number. nothing came up. when the truck is on, it wont shift into first. and from 3rd n 2nd it takes sum playing with the shifter to get it back in neutral

Re: tranny id!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course if you are wondering why it shifts "backwards", it might be because you have the arms on the wrong way. They should point up instead of down.

Ok, the problem with getting it into 1st gear sounds like the clutch isn't disengaging properly. Check the free play and adjust to 3/4 - 1".

The neutral problem could also be the clutch. Does it shift ok when the engine isn't running?

ok. i had another set of hands when i went out and got underneath the truck. i had my bro shift the gears while the truck was off. while i was under looking at the linkages 4rm the floor shift to the tranny. while he shifted from 2nd to 3rd. the rev. and 1st gear linkage moved also, so when tryin to down shift. the shifter wasnt sliding back into the hole it needed to be in the linkage 2 shift bak into neutral, 1st and rev.. i dont kno if that is the complete problem but it looks like to me. i havent driven it since the other nyte and tonight im goin to the cardinals and redskins game. so she'll jus have to sit another day. thanks ray for ur input. it is greatly appreciated n ill get bk to when i get her drivn dwn the street again

i finally figures it out! it jus needed a little adjusting. the nuts on the trany to the arms wer loose, adjusted the arms, put all new pins in. it just spent somtime on my back watching while my bro sat and shifted and figuring out how the linkage is spposed to be setup to make it functional again. still grinded from a dead stop to rev though. also put that seafoam stuff in the oil and in the fuel. havnt used it before...

This may still indicate that the clutch is not disengaging fully. Have you checked the pedal free play?

Well I still don't know what kind of transmission you have, because of the angle of the pic. It the cover is held on with 7 bolts, it is synchronized in all gears but reverse, so only reverse would grind. The other gears might be harder to shift into from a standstill though.

Re: tranny id!!!!!!!!!!!!

somebody correct me if I'm wrong but aint it just a regular gm saginaw 3 speed? like the 3 on the tree and such?

The 76 c10 we had was 3 on the tree converted to floor shift and was a side cover saginaw 3 speed.

Re: tranny id!!!!!!!!!!!!

yea im purdy sure its a saginaw. the side cover has 7bolts.
