New clutch, truck barely moves now,

new clutch 'kit'

I adjust the rod to where it almost falls off the clutch fork, and if I could adjust it more 'short' it would be good, but the truck barely moves like this, and I cant adjust it any more, whats wrong? ps, same setup before I tore it down, worked fine clutch was more worn though.

thank you

Re: New clutch, truck barely moves now,

did you replace install and adjust following the proper steps in a service manual?

Re: New clutch, truck barely moves now,

If it barely moves that means the clutch rod is too long and it's pushing in on the throw out bearing. Bring it back in so that you have no more than 1/2" to 1" of travel at the pedal.

If you can't do that, then clutch disc is installed wrong or defective, pressure plate is defective or throw out bearing is wrong one.

nope.

supposely the old man downtown knew what he was doing..I just let him show me/do it.

Could you possibly run me through the steps, or google ;)

Re: New clutch, truck barely moves now,

I saw a situation like your once. The wrong throwout out bearing was provided with the clutch parts. A "long" throwout bearing used with a bent finger diaphragm pressure plate caused slippage even with no pressure from the linkage.

Re: New clutch, truck barely moves now,

1 inch of free play huh?

Ok get this: I ordered a clutch kit for my truck (clutch throwout bearing pressureplate), I also had my flywheel turned at carquest

anyhow, I realized when I got home the throwout bearings didnt match, long story short we wernt able to come up with the same throwout bearing as my old one, well we got one that was the same, but a little different here and there, the guy at the parts store (manager, i trust him pretty good, he has a 67 step btw lol) said he thoguth it would work, mic said it was the same etc etc..I think it was from late 70's 3spd manual.

so..i'll try the 1" of freeplay and go from there, thanks guys maybe i'll get to go for a spin this evening..

I got the short throwout bearing in the 'kit', I soon realized it was wrong..got a long bearing from 70's model.

what did you do to solve that problem?

Oh, and welcome Kerry P!

which part does it sit on? Clutch fork, looks like 2 places for it, or does it matter?

We had to pull the trans back out and swap the short throwout bearing in place of the long.

If I remember correctly the six cylinders often used a flat (non-bent finger) diaphragm pressure plate while a lot eight cylinders used the bent finger. The added hight of the bent fingers combined with the long throwout bearing applied pressure to the fingers due to the fact that the clutch fork could not move back far enough to create any free play. Even with the rod from the cross shaft (z bar) to the fork disconnected the clutch still slipped.

Thanks for the welcome. Great forum here, Ive been lurking for a while and finally joined.

Most of my work has been on cars, never had a fork like yours. I'd guess either location could work. The inner notch appears to be better aligned with the rod from the cross shaft. The inner location will require less pedal travel but will feel firmer. Is there a spring to keep the rod located in the notch?

Yes there is a spring...

He wasnt able to get a 'long' throwout bearing for my truck?...We did get a 'long' one from a mid 70's truck though...idk, I hope its not wrong..ugh..

thanks, and yes, this place is great, you gotta truck of your own or ya just 'lurkin'

ima go a lil more tomorow..I really think I ended up doing something wrong though..

Could pulling the cover off (tin thing) let me be able to look at it all any easier?

Re: New clutch, truck barely moves now,

Yes, the first thing you need to do is take off the bellhousing bottom cover so you can see what is going on in there. I am betting your throwout bearing is too long. Once you get the bearing problem sorted out, the pushrod should go in the inner notch in the fork.

I put my clutch in backwards once. Is that possible?

It sure is. Sometimes you can get away with it. When you can't, the hub springs hang up on the flywheel bolt heads and then you can't disengage the clutch.

I just picked up a '70 GMC 1/2 ton 2wd. Most people say it is pretty rough. I think it looks pretty solid.

Good luck getting the clutch issue sorted out.

the backside of the clutch fork with the foot off clutch with approx. 1" of freeplay travel at pedel, the clutch fork rests on the front of the trans. imma try to get a pic,

man its almost COLD in the shade today upper 70's!!!

Re: New clutch, truck barely moves now,

You are missing the little wedge that goes on your push rod, between the rod and clutch fork. ;)

raycow 09-04-2010 12:42 PM

Re: New clutch, truck barely moves now,

Can you move the bearing rearward any, or is the rear end of the bearing already up against the front of the transmission?

Re: New clutch, truck barely moves now,

no thats on there...unfortunately, you had me excited lol..

its hard to see in the top picture..

ok, I went to autzone to order clutch kit for my truck, i received clutch pressure plate throwout bearing.

after i got home i realized my TB was a long one and I recieved a short one. i went back and ended up getting a TB from 70's truck.

Could the clutch have been made for the short TB?

Im on the fence whether or not i should pull the trans. lol

oldblue1968chevy 09-04-2010 01:06 PM

Re: New clutch, truck barely moves now,

appears that the rear of the bearing is against the trans already...

Re: New clutch, truck barely moves now,

try moving your rod to the inner hole, one closer from where it is now, that is where mine is setting.

oldblue1968chevy 09-04-2010 02:02 PM

Re: New clutch, truck barely moves now,

that is where it is at, i moved it since the picture...

its loosened all the way as much as it can without falling off the clutch fork..
