lifting cab off
Hey guys I am going to lift the cab off my 51 truck soon. I see some guys with a 4x4 thru the cab with an engine crane holding it up...is this the easiest way to lift it? Is it fairly sturdy? Any pics would be helpfull.

Re: lifting cab off
You've probably seen the threads where some have made those lifts out of 2x4's and they seem to work fine. But, if you have an AD with wing-vent doors and you want to leave the doors on the cab when you lift, those won't work. I tried on my 53. I ended up using ratchet straps....

Re: lifting cab off
If you do decide to use a board or beam across the top of the cherry picker, make some brackets (wood or metal) so that you can pivot that board on the front bolt (the one that normally holds the chain) of the cherry picker. It may take a longer bolt but it would make things a lot more secure.
I've got a big old gantry style setup that I use to pull engines and I usually lift cabs with it and roll the frame out from under it. Here I used it and my cherry picker to swap a raised roof from one van to another. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w...n/house006.jpg http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w...n/house008.jpg Lots of huffing and puffing an van pushing on that project but the actual swap was easy. |

Hey Bowties what did you hook the straps to on the inside of the cab? I have to do this before too long and was looking for tips too.

I made a A-frame out of 4x4's and 2x8's, and put a electric hoist and castors on it.

Used what I had on hand !!
I think the 4X4 works better IF you have enough concrete to move it around. |

Anyone have the "plans" for the 2x4 piece that connects to an engine hoist? I hope to be pulling my cab this weekend!

Re: lifting cab off
I've used two different methods. Four guys all grunting together, and the 4x4 on the cherry picker.
I prefer the 4x4 on the cherry picker but it does require that you have some room to move around. You can't pull the frame out from under the cab because of the cherry picker legs. Mr 48 what you show isn't what I would call a cherry picker. I'd call that a gantry crane. Is Central Washington really that different from Western Washington? A cherry picker is the mobile crane with a hydraulic jack that lifts the arm. I bolt a 4x4 to that arm using some 2x6 that is attached to the sides of the 4x4 at a right angle. The single bolt is actually a piece of threaded rod long enough to go through the cherry picker and the two pieces of 2x6 and then take nuts on each end. |
Re: lifting cab off
I just put a chain through the cab and pick them up with my Massey loader. I can drive them around and set them down. It was only $7000 used and when I'm not moving truck parts around, I can use it to bale hay.
