what is the correct oil pressure for a small block
I have been driving my Burb for about 4 months now. I noticed that the needle for the oil pressure is at about 15-20 (in the middle of 0 and 30) all the time.
So after a cold start, running idle, running 55 mph and when the engine is warmed up, the needle always seems to be in the same place. so three questions: 1. is 15-20 OK? (is this psi of mbar or what?) 2. shouldn't the needle move when increasing rpm's? 3. should there be a difference in cold and warm oil pressure? |
Re: what is the correct oil pressure for a small block
10psi per 1000 revs is pretty much the norm. I don't like mine to drop below about 25psi at idle, though.
I'd check the gauge first. You're right, pressure should be higher when cold (thicker oil = more resistance to flow) and should increase with rpm's. |

Re: what is the correct oil pressure for a small block
factory gauges aren't really that accurate. they give you a good estimation but are not spot on. An engine needs at least 7psi to run. 14.7psi=1bar. You will be fine with what you have even at cruising speed 15psi is enough. If you still have quals about it install an aftermarket mechanical oil pressure gauge. Ye you have to run an oil line into the cab but if you protect it you will be fine. Thats the best way to see what your running. You can always replace you factory oil pressure sensor for a more accurate reading. Once you start getting 10psi at idle then look into a rebuild, most likly will be main bearings or cam bearings. at that point you might even get a little lifter knock.

I got a cheap mechanical gauge set at orileys for around 30 bucks, im very pleased with it!

Mines at like 30 at idle and mazes out at 80 sometimes..
I got a stock 0-80 gauge Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: what is the correct oil pressure for a small block
oke,
thanks guys! all great solutions, but I would really just like to check the original guage or check the voltage or ohms at the connection of the guage. I got the voltmeter laying around and here in Europe it is not that easy to get parts like you can in the USA. hope somebody can help me with this question on volts or omhs? |

checked my oil guage during last ride: when ignition on and engine off: 0 when engine on: 15 when driving: 15 when idleing: 15 isnt that strange thats why I woud like to check it with a volt or ohm meter. please advise |
