Posi Rear questions
I am going to look at a 3.07 posi rear ('72, 5-lug, leaf-spring). First question, assuming the rear is in good shape, is it worth $250? Second question, can I remove the carrier and pinion gear and install it in my coil-spring diff without worries about gear set-up? Third question, what should I check before buying?
Thanks! |

Long answer; It can be done, but not w/o "worries". It takes a real pro to install used gears, and most of them will not do it anyway. It's just not worth the hassle. Gears just don't cost that much when compared to the labor involved in the big picture. So, options? Buy the axle and do the work needed to cut off and re-weld the brackets to convert it to work with your coil spring truck. Buy new gears and pay a pro to install them. Keep shopping for a coil spring axle with the gears you need. You didn't really say what you were looking to gain from this? the gear ratio change? or the Posi? |
Re: Posi Rear questions
I agree completely. Transfer the coil spring mounting parts to the leaf spring housing. Even if you have to pay someone to weld the brackets, this is still the better way to go.
