i have a 61 apache i am trying to put a electric fan in front of the radiator. both it hits the cross bars in front. what do the cross bars do?? and can i cut them out??

They brace the rad support, could you remove them, they remove them when installing a condenser for A/C.

I just put a fan in my 62 and put it in front and it clears the pulley by about an inch. Is there a difference which side.

If you have the room and the interference isn't very much you can space the radiator a bit to move it towards the motor.

Typically electric fans work more efficiently as pullers.....on the engine side. Of course your fan has to be either reversable or already working as a puller. If you need to install your fan in front of the radiator, I would remove the X brace on the radiator support. None of mine have that X brace there and I haven't had any problems with the radiator support.

More than the horsepower gain, I prefer the constant hum of an electric fan compared to the screaming you can get from a variety of stock and aftermarket fans at higher rpms.

I feel that your engine gets up to operating temperature quicker with an electric cooling fan(s)

Yes, you're removing a load by eleminating the mechanical fan; But, you have to make a lot of electricity to run those electric fans; it takes more power from the engine to turn the alternator at a higher loading to produce that electricity. In fact, you might need to get a bigger alternator to add electric fans.
