72 Custom/10 starting budget: 58¢

So it begins... Slow and Easy...

Finally got the truck home!!!
Wasn't shifting right on the drive home!
Today I was able to clean it up a bit (inside not the outside) and take some pictures.

The plan for the next couple of months:

1. install 700R4 (th350 still works so i'll leave it alone for now, but will install in the future)
3. clean up motor and tune up
4. brake job
5. fix turn signal lever (missing)
6. fix horn

I want it to be my daily driver.
Later on I will start on the bodywork... don't know how but I will learn!

Pictures to follow:

Transmission wouldn't shift on the way home from the PO. Posted a message to this forum, Ray told me what to do and now its shifts correctly. So glad I found this forum!

As for the progress waiting for the shop books (should be here by the weekend) and going to focus on the motor first then electrical, brakes, then suspension.
After all that then comes the body (will be taking a college class for that, because I don't have a clue!)
Want this to be my daily driver as soon as I can make it safe.

Oil pressure goes way down when at idle, was told it might be the oil pump...?
Speedo, temp gage, and turn signals don't work either... seems like the list just keeps getting longer...:waah:

Re: 72 Custom/10 starting budget: 58¢

Installed new oil pump yesturday, what a difference!
Was going to do the carrier bearing also but I ran out of gas....must be getting old.
Today I'm going to mess with the door handles, both have the buttons pushed in...

maybe its just the angle, but the bed looks extra long. Is it a Longhorn?

MrClean 10-05-2010 10:30 AM

Re: 72 Custom/10 starting budget: 58¢

No not a Longhorn, that angle does make the bed look really long.

Re: 72 Custom/10 starting budget: 58¢

This weekend I got a little done:
1. installed new set of red tail light lenses (both of the old ones where broken)
2. put a steel fuel filter in between the fuel pump & carb, and changed the rubber hose from carb to filter to steel line.
3. lined up my steering wheel (it was upside down & turning slightly right before)
4. fixed my turn signal problem! (installed lever that I found under the seat)
5. bought and installed PCV valve, and valve cover to air cleaner hose.

Re: 72 Custom/10 starting budget: 58¢

how's it running?

Keep up the good progress!

MrClean 10-12-2010 02:32 PM

Re: 72 Custom/10 starting budget: 58¢

It runs ok... but something is a little off... doesn't run smooth...
Haven't checked the plugs, wires, or timing yet because I want to upgrade to HEI.

So... I just ordered the Skip White HEI Distributor that some of guys here recommend and new plug wires.
Hopefully with the new distributor, wires, plugs, and timing it will run smoother! :cf:

Make sure you check all the vacuum lines and connections also. That can cause sputtering and lack of power too.

Fixed the gas gauge!!!! :metal:
Not really... found the unplugged wire and plugged it in...

Got a little done:
Installed my Skip White HEI distributor last Thursday along with new plugs and wires.
Need to redo the timing because a vacuum hose was unplugged when it was timed.

The average person would look at that, run, and go spend $45,000 on a new truck. Great job!

(I can buy a house for less than a new truck.)

Re: 72 Custom/10 starting budget: 58¢

Thanks!
Just doing a little bit at a time so that I don't get overwhelmed!
On the 29th of this month I'll be signing up for an autobody class at the local college, so that I can start doing some cosmetic stuff to her.:metal: CAN'T WAIT!!!!
