78 delay wiper conversion questions

1 Attachment(s)
What needs to be done to install a delay wiper switch & delay module into a truck that did not come with them stock?

I scored a delay switch and module with pigtail at the wrecking yard today and I badly need delay wipers in my 78 K20.

I assume I will need to cut and splice some wires off the back of my standard switch to make the connections to the delay module connector. I really doubt I can repin the connector but I will give it a try and see it the two different connectors share pin types. Not likely but it is worth a shot just in case.

Anybody do a how to or have insight to give on this? Wiring diagram?

I can't afford to screw up my wipers now that fall is here.

Same truck had part of a tach dash left so I got the small fuel gauge out of it too while I was at it.

Should be plug and chug. 78 Chevyrado over on the 73-87 board did it to his and he said it was a simple remove/replace operation. I tried to find his thread on it, but couldn't. You might shoot him a PM and see what he says.

plug and play using a delay switch and delay module
the non delay switch plug, plugs into the module and the module plugs into the delay switch. I have tried a few and had no luck getting a good pair (module and switch) when i had my '80
even when they work, they can be very finicky and come on whenever they want
I've had better luck with the newer style with the wipers on the turn stalk

you could build your own circuit

Thanks for the help. I was hoping they made it that simple figuring they may have done dealer installed delay setups too.

I will put it in today and test them out.

I considered installing a newer column with the turn signal stalk control but haven't seen a manual trans column with them yet. I do have a couple of the delay modules from the newer columns. Any idea if the newer module can be installed in place of the older one? It might address the finickyness of the older setup.

I did install a newer module in my '80, it was a $5 pull a part module and i didn't get it to work either. It has been awhile, but I believe the wire colors were the same, you just need the plugs to convert it. I think I still have a wiring diagram for both styles. I'll check and see.
Oh and I believe the columns are the same up to '94 in the newer body style

Thanks, that helps a bunch being able to get the newer column too.

I will give the older one a try and see how it works and go from there.

I would love to see those wire diagrams if you can track them down.

these diagrams show them to be the same.
If you can't see these, you can find them all here

Just compared the newer delay module to the older one. Output wires are the same count and colors so that is no big deal there.

Input wires are different colors and the number of wires is different. It will take a little research to make that side work right without messing up a delay module or two.
