Gen6 454 swap P/S hose??
 
I was getting all ready to finally drop the motor in my truck when a friend of a friend pointed out that I won't be able to re-use my original power steering hoses because new setup uses crimp on fittings.


If this is the case, is there a specific fitting or hose that I need to look for?

Or can I get away with cutting my hard lines as far back as possible, flair the ends and use a crimp on type of hose clamp for both pressure and return?



If someone knows the fitting size that threads into the steering box, maybe I can just remove my old lines and thread in a hydraulic hose and only have to crimp near the pump...?

There's a shop right across from work that I can stop in and get a custom line built, but I have no idea what the fitting size is and my lines seem to be seized into place as turning the fittings wants to twist the lines also and I don't want to bugger up anything if I'm not going about it the right way.
I'd also really like to avoid removing the steering box and power steering pump if possible....

I'm not sure about what your friend is talking about. You should be able to re-use your factory p.s. hoses and swap the fitting in the back of the 454's p.s. pump for the fitting out of your original pump. All the GM p.s. pumps have the same thread pitch in the pump itself. Goos luck. If that doesnt help post some pics sowe know what you're talking about.

It doesn't matter that the new pump and brackets are from a 2000 k2500?

Nope I screwed a 2001 5.3 hose into my stock 87 box. You will have problems if you have an early box that has inverted flare fittings. What model is your truck? Jay

Ooo this is good news I hope lol

My vin says the truck is an 82 3/4 ton.
However...
-the motor was replaced with some other mid 80's 350.
-the tcase tag has 85 stamped on it (maybe it doesn't mean year?)
-the grill is 84
-under the tremclad, the box is green
-under the tremclad, the cab is brown
-the front clip has newer quarter panels (white on bare metal)

So I'm just going by the vin since it appears to be some kinda cracker :crazy:

To keep with the mixed match theme, I'm adding:
-th400 from a heavy half 1/2ton 4x4
-bench seat out of a 3+3
-1999 silverado 454
-2000 GMC pullies and brackets
-late 70's np208 to th400 adaptor

Wife has dubbed it "****ty-****ty Bang-Bang" :D

Pull one of the lines and see if it is inverted flare or pilot. Inv. flare looks like a brake line, Pilot uses an Oring to seal it. If your box is inverted flare, You will either need to change the box to a later one, or you can change the valve in the pump to the early one from the original pump in your truck. Jay

I was able to pickup a small set of line wrenches from Canadian tire on my way home from work and took my high pressure line off the back of the pump, but none of these wrenches are big enough (5/8 and 11/16) to work the fittings on my steering box.

Buuuuuut, the fittings on the back of the 454 pump are NOT removable.
They just have a high pressure tube and return tube that are a few inches long with a "bubble" followed by a flared end.
I was told that i'd likely have to get either my old hoses cut and crimp on clamps installed, or I might be able to swap pullies and re use my old pump...providing my old pump bolts up and there's no internal changes between the years

Never saw a pump with non removable fitings. Post up some pics so we can give you the best advice.

The big fat fitting on the 454 pump will come off. Then you just screw your big fitting from your original pump in the new pump. Nothing to it.

Umm there is no fittings on the back of the 454 pump.
In the first picture of it you're looking at te high pressure Lin running flush into the bal of the pump.
In the second picture (last in the series) I took a pic showing the return fitting in the top of the pic and in the back the end of what used to be the high pressure line...all that's left off it is a crimp on clamp and an inch of rubber hose.

Tomorow I'll just take the pump off the bracket and throw the monkey wrench on my steering box hard line and try to get a shop to make me a couple of lines with the crimp fittings...
