Move steering column?

I just inherited an 85 longbed; with the seat all the way back, the steering wheel seems uncomfortably close; I would like to be able to stretch my arms forward about three inches when I drive; has anyone shortened their steering column and moved it forward a bit? I was thinking about taking out a short section where the column collapses, and drilling another hole up the shaft for the shear pin (I think that's what it is... Does anyone have any ideas?

R. L. Jaeger,

I have never heard of anyone modifying their steering column like you want to do. I do think there are options for you. You can order a special made column or install one out of a car. I believe car columns are short and will fit trucks. Tilt columns from an older Caprice should do the job but I'm not sure.

Thanks for the info; I guess I could check the yards for car columns and take some measurements!
