Project: Second time around...
This is going to be my '68 that I just got painted before this summer. When I started this project me and my wife just had our first kid and with tight funds. It was just going to be a beater build. Well it continued to grow and become more and more. Now that I've been driving it for the past three months I wish I'd done a better job. The biggest thing that bothers me is who ever cut the frame down didn't do a very good job... It's not even or right and at the time it's all I had. Second thing that I don't like is the big block. For my daily driver it uses to much fuel for the power it has... which is gutless. And I don't know who built it and I don't really trust it. Third thing I wish I'd painted and cleaned up everything. This go around I'll paint and detail everything. I'm still going to drive my '68 while I'm building this frame. I'll do all I can until I need to put the cab on and go from there. It'll have front and rear dropmembers, a carb'd 5.3 (have to be able to run my caddy air cleaner!!!), not for sure what tranny yet (some kind a automatic), I'll paint everything under the hood and I'll do the inside of the cab/jams. It'll get new glass (mine is scratched to hell.) I'll do a few different things to the outside of the body. It'll stay silver and white and it'll stay flat (which I love!) It'll get all new trim. Well see how it goes this time around.
Here's the two links that started this build. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=249897 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=400066 |

Here's what I did Tuesday and this evening. I need to decide if I want to just paint this or pay someone to powder coat it. If I paint it, it will be base clear. What do you all think? Paint or powder?

Heres my control arms. I bought them powder coated...
Attachment 638798 Attachment 638797 I got these headers from a fellow board member. Attachment 638800 And heres the candidate for the transplant. It came out of an '07 with less than 10,000 miles on it. It was a warranty motor. It lost oil pressure and the guy that was driving shut it off right away. My uncle got it for me where he works. I haven't tore into it yet to see the cause. Attachment 638799 Here's my '68. Attachment 638801 |

Re: Project: Second time around...
Thanks guys for the support. And 68GMCCustom it'll just be little 5.3 not like the 6.0 youve got. I was told that it's a 5.3 h.o. Because it's an aluminum block and there factory flattops..... If that's the case when I tear into it and the bottom end is good I'll just put a decent sized cam in it and do some head work to flow with that cam. I'd be happy with 350 to the ground anything more is just icing on the cake!

Sweet project

Re: Project: Second time around...
Thank ya. This is the one that I need to get powder coated or sprayed. I think I'm leaning more to base/clear. I'm pretty sure I can do it cheaper and I can touch it up if I scratch it....

Re: Project: Second time around...
Great looking build. As far as the frame goes, nothing holds up like powder coat, however even it wont hold up to dragging or scraping the frame against the concrete. If it was me, i would just spray it with a single stage paint depending on what color you plan on shooting it. It would be the easiest to touch up and probably a little cheaper on the budget. I actually sprated mine with rustoleum hammertone paint in contrasting colors for the frame and suspension components, and several people have asked me if mine was powdercoated. I wanted to be able to touch it up easily, but knew it would get scraped up since I drive it about an inch off the ground unless Im taking a long trip. A quick spray with the rattle can and any scratches disappear.

Re: Project: Second time around...
Thanks colin! Yeah I'll probably not powder coat this one. I don't know what it'll cost to get sand blasted, but I can spray this frame for no more than $300 thats including all the parts. Thats epoxy sealer, base, and clear. Thats probably what I'll do just cause that's what I'm used to spraying, but I'm sure single stage won't be that big of a deal. Well see...

I woke up this morning all excited about being able to get out and work on this truck and all I did was press some axle studs out of a pair of axles and bought some jack stands. I had plans to get the rear end prepped and perches welded on so I can put it in. Well that changed....
I ended up buying this and spending the most part of the day getting it home and some what cleaned up. I don't need it just couldn't pass it up. The first early 60's I've ever owned. Have no idea what I'll do with it might turn it to get some money for this frame. Heres a couple of pics... Attachment 639424 Attachment 639426 Attachment 639425 Attachment 639427 |

Got a little work done this weekend not much, but something. Got the new axles in the rear and everything cut off of it. Ball joints pressed in (I don't think there all the way in but I couldn't get them to go anymore). I need to order some spindles, but I don't know what I want. Do I want just some normal ECE 2.5 drop spindles or do I want CPP modular drop spindles for the narrower track width.....

Got my rear end finished up a week or so ago and I ordered my front spindles and rotors. So we'll see how long it takes to get them in and then I can get this frame rolling. Then I'll push it over in the corner so I can work on getting my Buick running. Then tear down for paint or powder..... probably paint. Can't make up my mind.......

Well not much done, but I did score a 5.3 for the big price of nothing....... that's right FREEBIE! So now I might rebuild this 5.3 for this truck and save the all aluminum 5.3 for my other '68. Unless the same place where I got this free 5.3 can hook me up with a 6.2. I'll see what happens.... patience pays out.

Attachment 659120 I replaced the left fender due to rust and I'll have to replace the left cab corner. It's all rusted out, but overall it's not bad. |

Re: Project: Second time around...
Thanks man! Yeah were pretty busy at work. That silver ford on the frame machine is my job right now. It was messed up! I wish I was a lot closer on my dads. I'd say I was almost done when I'm spraying some color on it!
