2GV Rochester

Put another accel pump plunger in my '69 today . This is the 4th one . Other 3 came apart . It's a long story . So far , my old truck runs good . Not sure how long it will last . Wonder if anyone else has had accel pump issues ? This last carb kit came from NAPA . Not sure about the others .

Stuck my pinky in there . Didn't feel anything . Rumor is that today gas mix is the culprit .

I had the same problem. I went through 3 of them also. The rubber seal kept tearing. In addition to checking the bore, make sure the return spring is not coming in to contact with the seal. I'm not sure if that is why mine was failing. I got frustrated and bought a reman. 2GV instead of buying a 3rd rebuild kit.

Re: 2GV Rochester

I not only have the bad accel pump but the 2GV on my 305 is not jetted right, I think it was meant for a '64 283...but I can vouch that the high-alcohol content fuel leave crystaline deposits and other damaging garbage in between the needle and seat as well as tearing cheap rubber. I "save" the old leather pump plungers in as many cases as I can.

I've seen people criticize the NAPA kits and praise the Autozone ones, but I had the opposite experience--the Autozone one (GP Sorenson) was 100% wrong in every way for the carb but I couldn't return it after opening it, which was required in order to find out everything was wrong! The NAPA Echlin kit had everything I needed and more, except for a float (didn't need anyway) and I went ahead and tried the rubber accel pump but as I expected it didn't work. I swapped the leather one back in but can't seem to "save" that one.

I'm not really meaning anything else in saying this except, don't swear off NAPA just because of the accel pump--that's not gonna improve anywhere else.

Day Four , truck's still running . Not very well . Took my two year old grandson for two laps around the block . It's backfiring thru the exhaust at 25 mph in second gear . Grandson thinks it's great . Gas is well over a year old . Wonder if that could make it run rough ? Plan to check the dwell , timing , and compression this weekend . Everything's new except the plugs and wires . Maybe I've got a fouled plug ? Any input ?

Re: 2GV Rochester

take your time and check all of the basics as you mentioned. Dwell, timing, etc. Does it idle ok? at the correct idle speeds? The old gas is not helping things but I doubt it is causing your issue. Don't let this cause you to go off in too many directions. IT is a very simple system and your answer will likely be something simple. What made you go into the carb to begin with?

Had three accel pump plungers fail . Carb was sent off and re built by a pro . I put the last pump in myself . It's running rough so I've got it idled way up . THANKS for your input .

I'd get that old gas out of there & put in some fresh with a can of Sea-Foam. Then take a look at your plugs. Rauchy gas, rich mixtures, & slow-stop start driveing will leave a black soot on them that will cause rough running.

Just went out to the garage and checked . My old pump plunger that failed has a black rubber . Pretty sure the one I installed from the NAPA kit was blue . THANKS!
