CUMMINS swap in my 71
ive been throwing around the idea of of a 12valve cummins swap in my 71 3/4 ton 4x4...i know theres been plenty of them swapped in the 73-87's but never seen one a 67-72. just wondering if anyone has done this or may have some pics of it done... im very familar with cummins engines and diesels in general, more the less, i just want to see clearance issues...

seen mosesburb's stuff?

Re: CUMMINS swap in my 71
I put one in my 72 Longhorn as well. I'm not done and I'm thinking about setting the engine back farther and redoing my RH side of my engine crossmember. But here is a link to my build thread:

Re: CUMMINS swap in my 71
man that is one sweet conversion ur workin on!... my plans for mine are gonna be using it for tuga truck. so theres not going to be much more than 3inches of lift. i see you mounted the engine very low in the frame but it that really needed for the fitment? im worried about axle clearance issues.... mine will more than likely remain stock to keep the turbo lag down... also my radiator and trans cooler will be mounted in the bed for more intercooler room.
are running or gonna be running hydroboost brakes, (ive been told its nessiary for a cummins swap?) lol i have so many questions running threw my head right now! |

Im working on one as well. Havent made much progress lately due to other projects keeping me busy but here are a few pics.

Re: CUMMINS swap in my 71
I plan on doing one of these swaps in the future. I picked up a rusty '91 D250 a few weeks ago with a sweet running VE pump Cummins and the 5 speed!

Re: CUMMINS swap in my 71
68GENIII very sweet truck!
White-noise, I sat it low because I wanted firewall clearance and I knew my truck would have a minimum of a 4" lift. Plus I plan on putting twin turbos on this soon once it is up and running with a P-pumped 24v. They sound so bad azz with .084 injection lines. Hydraboost is not necessary. Just get a vacuum pump and power steering pump from a dodge and you will be fine. Plenty of dodge trucks had them and were fine. What generation of engine do you have? |
Re: CUMMINS swap in my 71
well im looking to get a 98.5-2000 24valve, i have boxws of performance parts from previous trucks ive owned, lol and ive got a set of .110 lines and connector tubes and the hot rod vp44 off my last truck, it would lope like a built block lol.
yea the vacuum pump would work i guess but the extra room ill get from losing that huge booster would be nice lol |
Re: CUMMINS swap in my 71
How long have you had the HRVP44? They usually don't last real long from every one I've been around. I'm sure it did lope like crazy. We've got a P-pumped 24v with .084's on it and it lopes pretty good too. If I get this 24v core this weekend, I'm going to put it in my Longhorn project.

Re: CUMMINS swap in my 71
depends how much fuel pressure you keep to it, mine is a dragonfly and requires like 18-24psi ive seen them last 1000 miles and seen them last 200,000 miles. i love diesels, you can make some wicked retarded power out of them and also i graduated with a degree in diesel mechanics so its kinda my thing lol.
the mount setup you made looks just like the avalanche engineering kit they sell for our year trucks, but i may have to build one since im gonna go to 3inches of lift max. also ive got a big hub dana44 in the front of my truck now, how strong are they and why do they have the big hubs??? |
Re: CUMMINS swap in my 71
Shoot, we keep 18-24psi to all VP's because of the nature of the beast. I as well have a degree in diesel technology and work the job every day.
For the money I couldn't see purchasing the avalance kit. I build all my own engine mounts for my conversions and will until I can afford to just buy ones. But for the money, Auto world has the best ones hands down on the market. The big hub D44's were basically a gray area to help beef up the pay load on the K series line of trucks. It is the same center section but it has larger axle tubes than a standard 44. The axle tubes are turned down to fit inside the stock D44 center section. This is their weak link. Most of the ones I've seen break were plow trucks or trucks that were terrace jumping and things like that. If you were worried I'd just build a small truss for it and wait for a D60 to come along. |
Re: CUMMINS swap in my 71
I launched the 350 sbc in my dually last month and am toying around with the idea of doing the same thing. We have a '90 D30 dodge with a manual sitting ready to be salvaged as well which makes it all the more tantalizing. My only concern is that I am running a 373 gear ratio with an NV4500 transmission currently, I know that I can buy the adaptor plate to match up with the tranny and I already did a mild body lift to clear the NV so I think that I have lots of room, my only concern is the whole gear ratio thing, my rear end came out of an econoline with a 7.3 l so it is set up for diesel, just not to sure on where the torque curve is for the cummins compared to the 7.3.

Re: CUMMINS swap in my 71
I want one...just passed up a deal on a 6BT with 5-spd. It came with a Dana 60/70 4x4, tansfer case and misc. other parts. I am still wondering why I didn't pull the trigger on it more quickly.
|
Re: CUMMINS swap in my 71
68gmcdually- The torque curve starts around 2150 and the engine quits fueling around 2800 on most stock 5.9's just as a rough idea. With 3.73's it wouldn't be bad. 3:54 would be ideal, or just use a taller rear tire.

Re: CUMMINS swap in my 71
Has anyone done a 24v swap?
|
Re: CUMMINS swap in my 71
I'm doing a 24v swap in an 04 6.0 F-250 right now. It's lots of fun.

Re: CUMMINS swap in my 71
That 90 auto has a 727 which is just a 3 speed w/o overdrive as well. It more than likely has the 3.07 gear ratio axle too. With that NV4500 the overdrive will help out a lot and make it easier to get going with the 3.73's. What NV4500 do you have? Was it from a gas truck, or a diesel?
|
Re: CUMMINS swap in my 71
The original NV4500 was from a '92 Chev. coupled to the SBC but, it needed to be rebuilt and I sourced a used one that I installed and I am unsure of its year or what it was coupled to? Is there anyway to find out from the numbers on it?

Re: CUMMINS swap in my 71
Let me do some checking this weekend. I'm pretty sure you'll need to change the input shaft when you go to the cummins. I would anyway, I can get you a great deal on a hardened stock size dodge cummins style if you want.
|
Re: CUMMINS swap in my 71
yes you will have to change the input shaft to a dodge shaft. you will probley want to update the 5th gear nut as well, they tent to back off alot and you will lose 5th gear. also NV parts are about impossible to find anymore since they have been in business in many years, try to stay away from jap parts if all possible!
check out quad4x4, thats where ive always got nv4500 parts from. http://quad4x4.com/NV4500_Transmission_Kits.html lots of good info there too!!! |
Re: CUMMINS swap in my 71
Thanks for all of the help and advice, I appreciate it. I will try to find out what NV I have, so that I can try to source the correct parts to marry it up to the 5.9 and make a truck out of it.

Well the snow has melted and I am thinking that it's time to do the swap. How is your conversion going?
