87 TBI Cam Question

I recently picked up an 87 GMC 3/4 4x4 SM465 (V2500?) with a TBI 350. It seems to run pretty good but the exhaust blows some pretty heavy white smoke. The first thing I want to do is a head gasket and seal job so I was thinking I might throw a cam in it at the same time. Is there a good cam to run in these trucks. Im looking for something mild for the street.

Re: 87 TBI Cam Question

I did some searching some time ago as I have the same truck and have the 350 engine in my shop but from what I read with the TBi there was not much in the way of improvement you can get from cams and headers to make it worth it but maybe somebody has some input on this.

For a nicely performing (non-roller) cam upgrade in a stock 350 I would chose Melling MTC1 camshaft. It was designed for torque - RV applications for SBC truck engines with hydraulic flat tappets 1957-86 car and 1957-95 truck - NO ROLLER CAM APPS!!

Basic specs -
Idle - Smooth idle at 675-700 RPM.
Better lower end power. Great highway cam. Perfect off-road and towing cam. Fine with stock heads, rear end, exhaust, intake. Make sure to upgrade your springs - old springs should be replaced (They are tired and can not handle too much lift)!

Valve Lift 0.420/0.443 with 1.5:1 rocker arm

Adv Duration 270/280

Duration @ .050 204/214
*
LSA 112 (107/117)

To take full advantage of this cam contact Brian at TBIchips.com - they have an optimized chip for this cam and engine combo.

Alternative cams are: Summit Racing SUM-K1102 or Edelbrock performer
Do not forget to get EOS and properly brake-in cam-lifters (make sure to get quality lifters - Comp-Cams, etc)
