Quick and easy fuel gauge question
 

For you guys that have properly working fuel gauges. Where does your needle sit when the key if off? This is for a 71 if it matters. Pics would be great. Thanks in advance

I've got a custom tank in the rear of the truck and my gauge falls to the 9 oclock position when turned off

So, it looks like there is no set place for it to be. I have two different gauges to use in the set I am restoring, and the both have two different settings.

Are they stock gauges? If they go all the way to one side ot the other, that's a problem unless your gas tank is actually full.

Yes, everything is stock. I got burned big time on a tach dash with white faced gauges from that ebay seller, which has been nothing but a fiasco and has cost me a ton of time and money. But that's another story.:waah:

Anyway, the fuel gauge from the ebay gauge sits at 1/2 tank when the key is on, and the tank is near empty. When the key is off, it goes just above empty. I hooked up the original gauge, and it sits at about an 1/8th of tank when the key is off, and goes to empty when the key is on. So, it seems the old gauge works ok.

It looks like I will be getting a set of the white face stickers so I can use the original gauge. I pulled the needle off the ebay gauge and it will pop on any place you set it. The original gauge has a flat spot so it will only go on one way.

Don't know if this info is helpful but I have a stock fuel gauge and when I turn the key off the gauge drops about 1/8 tank. When I turn the key back on it raises an 1/8 tank back to where it was.

Mine sits where it is but sometimes if i leave it for a while(like a week) it will move a little but never to one side or another. My old one did that and went bad soon after.

mine drifts up to 7/8 of a tank every time i shut the key off. It does this really slowly. I think this is just part of the personality of the truck though because it seems everyone's does something different. Maybe go by something else to determine if the gas gauge is good? Maybe try grounding the wire and confirming the gauge goes to its max or minimum? I'm not sure if that's bad for the gauge or not though. So be careful.
