4 speed trans
I am building a 69 4x4 truck . Did this come w/ a sm465 trans , is this a good trans ?
|
I don't know if it came with a sm465. If I had to guess, I'd say it came with a sm420.
Both are great transmissions. Keep oil in it and that's really all you have to do to make it survive. -- Mike |
My 69 GMC has the SM465. I think the difference between the two is that the -465 has a hump on the drivers side and the -420 has a hump on the passenger side. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

The 420 and 465 are not the same internally - the 465 is a slight evolution of the same basic design.
The 420 has a fist gear in the 7's. The 465 is 6.55. 420 is somewhat smaller. -- Mike |
The 465 also has a webbing or finned casting on the sides of the case where the 420 does not. I think that 67 was the last production year for the 420 (with some carry over in 68).
If reverse is towards the driver and down, it's an SM420. If it's towards the passenger and down, it's an SM465. |
My '69 has a 465. So does my '68. I don't think any of the 420's made it to '69.

1969 has m465 tranny & rockwell xfer case. That's why the xfer case lever is on the left side of the hump. The np205 xfer case shift lever is to the right of the tranny lever.

They stopped putting the sm420 tranny in in 1967. I have never seen on in a newer truck factory. The sm465 was used into the mid ninties with heavy duty trucks
