Does the temp light have a function in a truck with gauges?

I am also wondering if its supposed to light up while cranking the engine in order to test the bulb like in a modern truck? Mine doesn't light up at all.

All lights should light up when you turn the ignition on AFAI know. Yes a test signal is sent to show the light is working.

Thanks! Do you know if the temp light works in a truck with gauges?

If I remember correctly, it won't. I swapped from idiot light to guages one time and you have to move a couple of wires in the dash harness for it to work right. Take a look at GMC Pauls website. He has a FAQ on there about it. I know on both of my trucks I have guages, and only the Brake light comes on while cranking.

Nope the temp light does not normally work in a gauge truck. You can however take the wires out of an idiot light truck and insert them into the gauge harness and terminal blocks/connectors. The clusters circuit board has the trace in it to that bulb location. Add the bulb to the cluster and put an indicator light sensor into the other head and a way you go. Take it a step further and plumb a tee into the oil pressure port and add the indicator light sender and tee that wire into the wire for the indicator for the temp sender and you will have a check engine light of sorts. Either will trigger the temp light and you will know to check your gauges.

there shouldn't even be a light bulb or holder in there on a guage truck.

I was thinking of using the space as an indicator to remind me when I'm in four wheel drive. My 87 K5 Blazer has one in the same position, I thought it would be nice as I have actually forgot to take it out of 4 wheel drive a few times. I will throw a switch similar to a brake light switch against the lever under the boot and find a "Four wheel drive" lens to mount in the temp space indicator. Voila! Welcome to the 80s!

If I can ever get my TBI back on track I plan on using it for a SES light. I'm going to get a bulb holder and cut the metal tabs off. Then solder some wires to go out the back of the holder to wire it up.

I used my temp light hole as a alt charge light. On when not charging ( I have a CS alternator with one wire turn on and the stud wire back to battery. I actually took a spare 194 plastic bulb holder like for a side marker and filed the tabs till it fit in the temp light hole.
