I wonder if you could pick the top off... or if they'd let you.

I know it comes off, but it's a job as I understand it. They probably wouldn't let you in with the equipment you'd need.

Does anyone know if they used the standard blazer frame for those? Then added a extended portion? Did they use a short bed chevy truck frame? I ask because the rails stick out under that bottom section on the back a bit.

p.s. read more about it:

Oh, the horror!

I'd buy it just for the VIN, it's bound to be worth something someday.

Sad. I don't see enough damage to scrap it.

It's missing the top, isn't it?Maybe it flew off and that's where the owner gave up on it.Or,someone actually raped it off for another Chalet? They were built off a normal K/5.

PM sent to BIG V for the SN # build date info from the plate by the back door.

If the Blazer itself is in good enough shape to salvage, then guys should not separate the camper from the original Blazer, otherwise the collector value is wiped out. From all the orphaned shells-only I've seen for sale, the going rate usually always falls to $300-400. The complete vehicle (when they are in good shape) is what's valuable to collectors since these came that way from the factory. I managed to sell mine for $8500 recently (see this thread), but would have rather kept it if the economy wasn't so bad.

These were put on Blazers with slightly more heavy duty suspension (not quite enough, though), and Chinook or GM must have fabricated bumper extensions for them. These bolt on to the rear seat holes - I think - along with the standard camper shell holes, but these units are one heckuva chore to remove and really aren't free standing. A brace needs to be made to support the cabover section when they are off the Blazer. On the RPO tags in the glovebox, it will say "16T5 Chalet Camper Pkg" on the option list, but there is nothing on the VIN to say it's a Chalet.

Re-attaching flown-off roofs to these is also a horrible chore, but it could be a marvelous opportunity to perhaps adapt a Toyota Chinook roof to it and customize it so that it overlaps the walls. That's a job for an expert fiberglasser. The original design sits literally on top of the walls, and the way the water drains off the top is an open invitation to leakage inside the camper...

Oh, wait, I know that one, it's SN 1022, built 11/76. One of our Chalet owners forum members checked it out several years ago near Sacramento and sent me the photo below. I'd forgotten it had the black fender flares, but that detail was what helped me locate it in my mega-spreadsheet file. Notice also the AAA decal on the back bumper toward the left above the rub strip is the same in Big V's photos.

Thanks, more just the luck of collecting photos and for sale ads. My mega-spreadsheet shows over 200 where I am reasonably sure they are still around, but I'm thinking there's probably a few hundred more out there to be discovered just like this one.

Do you have contact info for the junkyard? A couple of the guys in that area in our Chalet owners forum could probably use some parts off it, or they might get the whole thing.

There was just one (camper section only) on CL here. He had it listed one week as a Blazer camper shell at 800.00 then the next week as a rare Blazer Chalet at 1000.00. There are at lest two complete ones in the area as well.

I was fortunate to catch the prior owner of that one before he sold it to the current seller, it's #1243. Haven't corresponded with the current seller, just tried to find out if he could salvage the truck part to at least maintain some of the collector value.

One of our Yahoo forum members in AK was recently selling #1054 which is unusual for having no front camper windows from the factory. Another of our Ak members was selling his #0560, but I lost track of him about a year and a half ago. Those might be the two you see in that area, but there could be others, please do snag photos of them if the opportunity is available.

Thanks for the alert, I am aware of it, but I wasn't picking up this newest Craigslist link in my usual pair of bookmarked searches, maybe because he has it as 'chevy chalet' instead of 'blazer chalet'. It's owned by one of our newer Yahoo forum members, but was formerly owned by 67-72 member "Big Block", see his post about it here.

Sure wish someone locally would save this thing! That's a shame.
