The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find
5 Attachment(s)
I have been meaning to start this a long time ago, but have been working on the truck too much to type & post. So, as I sit here with the flu, bored & sick out of my mind, I will see if I can figure out how to make this work. My sister lives in Arkansas on about 280 acres. Ever since I was a kid I have never seen the whole property. I was there in Jan. 2010 visiting & decided to go check it all out. I got on the Kawasaki Mule & booked from one field to another. Towards the back of the property I came across an old barn with this sitting in it. http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...k/untitled.jpg http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z..._6947029_n.jpg http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z..._2569039_n.jpg I then walked across the dirt road to find this in my great grandfathers delapadated house. http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z..._4826960_n.jpg |

I am either really sick or I just have to figure out this picture posting thing, please forgive me for the double prints. Help & advice are always welcome. |
Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find
So after checking this thing out I got back to the house & asked whose it was.
It belonged to a local guy & it had been sitting there for a number of years. I said that if the old man ever thought about selling it, to give me a call. Then in early March, my phone rang & we started the negotiation process. There were basically 2 & 1/2 trucks stored in between the barn & the house. The long wheel base in the barn & a short wheel base frame in the house with various parts scattered around. The truck is a one owner farm truck with about 84K on the ticker. The other truck was from the farmers kid who was gonna' build a SWB truck out of all the stuff. After a couple of phone calls we agreed on a price... I get all the truck stuff and he gets a almost brand new... Remington 30-06 rifle with a Leopold scope... They need hunting stuff more than old trucks in the country, I suppose... |

Looks to be fairly rust free and all there. Nice buy or do I say trade. :D

Then the process of planning on how to get it the 400 miles from there to Texas.
My fellow gearhead friend and I took vacation time & headed north. What followed was a whole lot of "had to be there" moments that make us either laugh or cry even to this day. We broke a 10,000 pound tow strap getting her out of the barn as all four drums were seized, but we got it done. Did I tell you she did NOT want to come to Texas? Not at all... http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...en-Truck/1.jpg |

What happened after this is where it got ugly...
It was July in 113 degree weather that day... We did a cab swap right there in the middle of frickin' nowhere, population less than 70. We had, 4 guys, a tractor, an I-beam, a few boards, a couple of steel wheels, 2 floor jacks and a dirt road.... Can you say memories? We got it done & none of us died or got seriously wounded... We got her to Texas the next day. http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...n-Truck/10.jpg http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...en-Truck/9.jpg http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...n-Truck/13.jpg http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...n-Truck/16.jpg |
Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find
I cleaned up the nearly 3 inch deep bird poo off of her roof at a carwash in Somewhere, Tx.
I thought it was best since momma's van got moved outside of the garage for this build to happen. You know, try to make a good first impression. I first cleaned up the firewall and prepped and painted it. Before... http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...n-Truck/19.jpg After... http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...n-Truck/20.jpg |
Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find

Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find
I swapped out the cab mounts when I got it home.
It felt much better laying on concrete than gravel. http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...Day2010003.jpg I needed new spider gears for the 12 bolt rearend. The farmers kid lost them somewhere during his tinkering. I ended up just getting a rear from a 72 instead. I got it out and was ready to swap it out when... I made the mistake of looking at the trailing arm bushings. Then it went something like this. http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...n-Truck/34.jpg http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...n-Truck/35.jpg Then the next thing I knew, I was looking at this... http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...n-Truck/40.jpg Am I the only on this has happened too? |
Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find
Nope....we all get the "might as well" bug to make things better when we start doing things. Looks like a really nice start to a project!

Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find
Here are a few before & after pics....
I hope you all don't mind a lot of pictures. Posts without pics are criminal as far as I am concerned... http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...n-Truck/43.jpg http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...n-Truck/41.jpg The kid put a torch to the springs & wasted them. I got a set of Jeep springs for $20 bucks. Did I mention this is a budget build? Or it could be that I am a tightwad with my hard earned dollar... http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...n-Truck/46.jpg I got a new coil spring retainer set from CPP. http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z.../HotRod005.jpg I also bought some paint blemished, lowered shocks from CPP's flea-bay store. Once again, $20 bucks. Paint blems don't scare Capt. Krylon... http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z.../HotRod010.jpg This is what gravel can do to your U-bolts. http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...n-Truck/44.jpg I got Eagle Trucks on highway 59 to make me some new ones. http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...n-Truck/45.jpg |
Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find
I sat there looking at this shiny new stuff and then looked at my newly acquired 12 bolt.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z.../72rearend.jpg This just would not do. http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...n-Truck/21.jpg So, let the work dirty work, begin. http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...n-Truck/22.jpg http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...n-Truck/23.jpg Before... http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...n-Truck/26.jpg After... http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...n-Truck/27.jpg http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...n-Truck/25.jpg http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...n-Truck/32.jpg |

Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find
I was able to get it all put back together over Labor Day weekend.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z.../HotRod016.jpg http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z.../HotRod020.jpg Then brown dropped this off at my door from CPP's flea-bay store. http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...Day2010019.jpg I figure there is no sense in making it Go, if it can't Stop. On to the brakes & brake lines. I grew tired of trying to find a rear-center brake line that would work. They were either too short, or too long. (or to much money!) I proceeded to Smiley's racing on Rayford-Sawdust on got the parts to make this. (Talk to Roy, great guy who just picked up a 57 truck himself) http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z.../brakes004.jpg http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z.../brakes008.jpg http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z.../brakes007.jpg |

I think I forgot to mention, I stipped and painted the frame.
I just about stripped and painted every piece that I have taken off. It ain't perfect,cuz' I'm building her to haul asphalt, not be purty... ;) http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...Day2010011.jpg http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...Day2010012.jpg http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...Day2010017.jpg http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...Day2010008.jpg http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...Day2010015.jpg http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...Day2010004.jpg http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...Day2010014.jpg |

Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find
My best friends parents have a 87, 3/4 ton GMC van.
He was going to take the motor and trans out of and put into his 66 Chevy truck. Hurricane Ike had other plans & dropped an oak tree down the center of the truck. Thus, the van is still untouched. He told me wasn't going to use it for any projects. (His new toy is a 31 (?) Ford truck he has built a 454 BB for it.) So... I call his folks and go check out the van. They have owned it since new and the 350/700R4 combo only has about 40K on it since the rebuild of both of them. Did I mention COLD A/C and new tires with about 400 miles on them? I bought it for $800 bucks. http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...onorvan002.jpg I go meet my "best friend" to talk about getting it ready for the, "extraction." I pay his dad for it and leave the keys there at the house. Since we will yank the stuff out right there in his shop, why take it home... He said he was gonna' do this, but I didn't really believe him... Too, frickin' funny... After I finished laughing, I went by the house and took the keys from him... |
Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find
great find for a good price/trade
great looking project !! |
Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find
I had a couple days off and prepped the van for the "procedure."
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z.../vanbefore.jpg http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...k/outafter.jpg We then started the long, tedious, process of taking a motor out of a van... Whew, talkin' about a tight fit. http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...0-15-10005.jpg BURP!!! http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...0-15-10006.jpg She said to her shrink, "I just feel so empty inside." http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...0-15-10008.jpg And here she is in all her greasy glory. http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...0-15-10011.jpg Then I brought the brain and heart home to meet... Frankien-Truck... It was love at first sight. http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...0-15-10012.jpg |
