front drums
 

i have never dealt with front drum brakes before...do front drums come off the same way the back ones do?? may be a dumb question...but ive tried and they arent wanting to come off...thank you all..:metal:

They're riveted on. 3 big rivets to the hub. Pull the dust cap off. Remove the cotterkey and the big nut and the whole assembly slides off together. You can grind off the rivets too if you want too. Then the drum comes off like the back.

ok thank you ....so if i want to change the front brakes,,i grind off the rivets,then what do i do when i put them back on??? lol

No, this is not necessary unless you need to replace the drums. Otherwise, just remove the big nut under the grease cap and pull the hub and drum off together.

by takin the hub off you get to clean and inspect the wheel bearings removing the petrified old grease and putting in new clean slick grease and adjusting them .. so in the end you'll endup with new brakes and smooth new bearings with less rolling resistance for a more economical rolling frontend. while you're at it a good time to check and grease the front suspension


that is the "oldschool" way of doing frontend maintenence

to pack the bearing, after cleaning the bearing, put some grease in the palm of your hand and with the wider side facing your palm scope the grease towards your arm while pushing the bearing into your palm.
keep doing this as you turn the bearing and get the whole thing packed with new grease.. then turn it over and do the same
clean out the races in the hub that is part of the drum(untill you unrivit it)
and add a little new grease to the races(part where the bearings ride) there is one on the front and back..
get a new grease seal..
put a little grease on the spindle shaft where the bearing ride..
with the drum wheel studs face'n the ground /table/whatever your working off of.
drop the packed with new grease bearing(the bigger of the two) back in narrow part first, so it sits on the race in the hub.
reinstall the grease seal. new or used(some reuse it, )
pick you drum and after you've installed your shoes and adj. the shoes, put the drum back on.. then the front bearing narrow part forward,, then the washer then the nut
setting the nut preload is a feel type thing.. you want to remove any in and out movement of the drum ,
next add the cottor pin, and dust cap.
adj brakes with a brake spoon..
good luck..
trick for getting bearing(rear) and grease seal out of drum..
after you have the front bearing out.. put the nut back on.. slide the drum forward letting thenut catch on the rear bearing.. and then give it a good yank..
the nut/bearing and seal will be on the spindle shaft and drum in your hand..
