You should be able to silver solder it back together.

Thanks Dave; I asked them about repairing it. They said that the part was a zinc casting that cannot be welded. They said that they could have another shop afix a plate under the wing to pin it, then metal spray it, then they could chrome over that-but that you could notice that it had been repaired.

They didnot talk about silver soldering, I will discuss this with them. If they do not know of anyone who does this, do you or the other members know of a shop I could send it to for this type of repair should I not find another part?

I looked at that website but I don't think I have the skill and experience to be able to do the repair myself.

The silver solder solution sounds good but I have no clue as to where to look to find a craftman to do this.

Silver soldering won't work. The solder melts at a higher temperature than the zinc casting.

Silver solder melts at 300F degress 96% tin, 4% silver , sliver braze which most people think of as sliver solder or hard solder melts at 800 or so and is almost 50% silver.

I used to fix pewter and white metal jewelery with it back when I was a bench jeweler. I would clean the joint up flux it and wire it together with iron wire ( mechaincs wire) not copper wire, set it into a sand filled box for support and put it in and oven for 45 minutes or so at 350 degrees. The solder will flow into the joint. I don't see why it won't work on a hood ornament.

Yep, I was talking about hard solder. If the 96% tin product will adhere to zinc there is no good reason not to try it.

There is a product called LT145 that is for this purpose but I had to get it in England and ship it here. It may be available here now
