Fan shrouds

Hi guys,

What's the difference between fan shrouds? Are they classified by big block small block or by short and long water pump assemblies? The one in my truck broke a bottom ear off and had an unfortunate meeting with the fan going down the highway. The depth dimensions on mine are 5 1/4" top and 5 3/4" bottom and i'm using it with a long water pump on my bbc.

Thanks -steve

Re: Fan shrouds

Factory Big Block Trucks has its own shroud.
Small block trucks has one for factory A/C trucks, one without A/C, one for 4 Wheel drive.
Chevy in line 6 cyl have just a metal topper shroud over the fan blades.
GMC V6 have a full shroud as all the other trucks.

The GMC 6 cyl shroud & one of the small block shrouds may be the same.

Re: Fan shrouds

Post a pic of your shroud, anyone on the board can tell right off its a big block shroud.
If its not a Big Block shroud someone on the board can I.D. it.
If not get the part # off of it, its on it somewhere you just need to find it and you will know what you need.

The shroud on my 4x4 measures about 9" deep.... I'd guess that one's from a 2wd.

Looks like a 4wd shroud to me too.

What engine do you have now? If it's a small block, is it in the factory small block 2wd position? Sometimes when people replace a 6 cyl with a small block they put the small block in the back position, if that's the case you will want the 4wd shroud.

How close is the distributor cap to the firewall? If it's real close, you need teh 4wd shroud. If it's a couple inches away than the 2wd shroud is what you want.

Re: Fan shrouds

Thanks for your help guys,

I've got a big block and it's located in the rear most holes. The shroud i pulled out was 5 1/4" on top 5 3/4" on bottom and doesn't quite look like anything of the pics yet. This set up was put together by the previous owner many years ago when he did a big block conversion on the truck. When i purchase the truck i dropped my own bbc in but stuck with this accessory and fan shroud arrangement since it worked. I may have to go wander the salvage yard.

Could this shroud maybe from a 73-87 4x4?

70jnktrk your shroud could possibly work, but it makes me wonder why your is 5 3/4" on top and mine narrower on top than the bottom? If the motor leans a few degrees back that would effectively tip the top of the fan back making it sit further from the radiator than the bottom of the fan. Therefore the proper shroud should actually by wider at the top than the bottom? Just the opposite of what i have.

Just pondering over coffee. -steve

Re: Fan shrouds

burb71, a funny thing, I know of a 68 original with a stock straight 6 & auto and it has the whole shroud, not the metal topped shroud. It looks like the stock one used for a small block V8 but with a slight difference I'm guessing. I tried using a small V8 stock shroud thinking it's the same as the 68 straight 6 with my 67 straight 6, which I made into an automatic. It turns out there is a slight rub on the bottom right with the blade and shroud. So I was hoping to find one for a 6 cly or maybe there's something more that I need to figure out. I need to messure the 68 fan blades. Sssssoooooo, Sorry to carry on, snj8198 the # I got off a shroud from a 72 Suburban 2WD 350 V8 Auto with A/C is 3889079. I would think it be the same as a pick-up 2WD 350 V8 Auto with A/C. Your pic's do look different then 2WD, is your truck 4WD ? Or it's like 71swb4x4 mentioned. I have two shourds, not 4 sale, one off a 72 Suburban as said above with A/C and it measures 5 7/8 top center and the other one without A/C, 2WD 350 not sure if auto or manual that measures 5 1/8 top center, sorry no #'s on this one. Thanks for the info and time hope to of help. Nick

Re: Fan shrouds

this is for the truck in my signature so it is a 4x4 with big block no a/c.

Re: Fan shrouds

None of the 67-72 GM's came with a big block and 4wd, so you may be searching for something that works, not something that was stock.

Re: Fan shrouds

Holy dead thread batman!

Seriously though. I'm replacing the fan shroud in my 72 c/10. I have the 350 in it, and my truck was originally a non-a/c truck, though I now have the bigger radiator in it (Texas!).
So... should I get the a/c fan shroud?
Seems like the non-a/c one I got doesn't fit too well at the top. There is a big gap between the should mounting holes, and the brackets it mounts to.

Todd
