I think it's time for an upgrade...
Looked at my exhaust again today. I knew that it was really rusty after sitting a long time until I bought the truck, well apparently me driving it to the shop and back has knocked up some little pebbles or something because there are now little holes all along my exhaust. Right now it has the stock manifold and a glass-pack (more like a rusty pipe). I want to put new headers on it and mufflers that will increase performance and be pretty loud (without blowing up my budget). Do any of you have a setup like this on your trucks? IF so what is it and do you have pictures? That would be great.
Thanks in advance. |

Re: I think it's time for an upgrade...
You'll get all kinds of opinions on this but here's my .02.
I ran a 3" dual Flowmaster 40 and Hedman Headers setup on my '79 K5 for a few years and I loved the sound of it. It sounded fantastic. I would even get people asking me on the street what I was running for exhaust (which I found a little funny). That truck is long gone and with my current truck I really "only" want to run a dual exhaust maybe 2 1/4 - 1/2" with some quiet turbos and OEM (ram's horn) manifolds. To be honest, I just don't want something loud. Maybe its my age, but I'm kind of over the loud exhaust. It sounds great and all, but it definitely gets old after a while. |

Another thing about headers (although I didn't have this problem with the K5) is that depending on the header you purchase, it may be a pain to change spark plugs. You can, however, get a special spark plug wrench for headers.

Re: I think it's time for an upgrade...
I just bought a Thrush Welded Muffler. It'll be pretty dang loud on a dual setup. It's loud on my 2.5" single setup. Sounds like a flowmaster but with a tad less of the "tinny" quality, though it still has that. I think the one I bought was at Advance and was $30-$35 or so.
Here's a bad video of it to help you judge the sound and volume... the exhaust exits on the drivers side of the truck and it's still loud. I don't know about in the cab resonance. I have my cab sound deadened so good with the windows up its silent... Thrush Welded Chambered 2.5" single |
