under bed gas tank conversion?
 

What tank is every one using to put the gas tank under the bed? I know they sometimes use the blazer tank, is there anything else?

I used the one that CPP sells...not too happy with it. The fill neck comes out right at the frame rail and in order to route the fill hose, I had to notch the frame rail and run some hose up the inner wheel well. I like the "stealth" look of the fill point, but I'm still bitter about having to notch the frame.

Another point of dislike is how low the tank sits. It almost entirely covers the rear diff cover. I know that there are some Stainless options out there, and custom tanks as well but I don't think I even want to know how much $$$ that costs!

Ricks tanks fabbed up a stainless tank for my Camaro project that is truly a work of art--but I am paying for that one! Since the '63 is my parts runner for now it gets the cheapie parts. Once the Camaro is done, the C10 will get the primo parts as well.

i saw a thread where a guy used a 69 camaro tank and hid the filler behind the plate. im gonna use a 72 camaro tank i have lying around, ill post up pis once its done...

Check out Lakeroadsters build thread. He used a late 40's early 50's car tank. It worked out very well. There are also 2 board vendors that make aluminum fuel tanks. They can be found in the 'Vendors Marketplace' here on the board.

The `70 camaro tank is 40.5 inches wide, and 7 inches deep, your frame rails are 27.5 inches wide inside measurement, you plan on bolting on below the frame rails...?

Caution... Ranting starts now....

While I applaude creativity, IMO these low hanging tanks that are visible from the back and side of the truck look like an afterthought, not a well engineered and implemented modification.

To each their own, that look is not what I would want after putting in all the effort. This stuff bugs me, like the new vehicles that are being built with gas tanks, mufflers and spare tries hanging down and visible from the back... aarrggghh

If:

- you are running a large rear step bumper the low hang tank isn't as noticeable,
- you run a nice clean roll pan then the low hang tank would be really noticeable,
- you have a longbed vs. shortbed the longbed low hang tank isn't as noticeable.

Even the popular "blazer" style tanks hang pretty darn low, again, IMO

I`m with you John, too much tank hanging down, if he wants the rear filler he can use the 1970 challenger or cuda tank or early `65 to 70 mustang which the latter will require some rail trimming to fit.

I agree. Even on a 4x4 they will hang low. They looked low on the Blazers that they came on. That's been one of the things holding me back from this swap.

Gen III go here http://www.quantaproducts.com/ they give measurements for most tanks, the cuda /challenger for `70 /71 fits, although mopar uses 240 ohm senders, if using aftermarket gauges its not a problem, just order the gas gage for a mopar, if using stock gauges you`ll have to convert the gauge or sender. the tank fill is separate, which is a plus if you need to adjust where you want it to come out, you can cut/weld to your liking or order one from another body style mopar.

wow! there are so many different possibilities! I;m glad i asked about this because i almost bought the blazer gas tank, and now im glad that i didnt1 i really like the early 50's car tank, i just want the filler to be in the bed, does the wood in the bed interfeer with the gas tank? it looks like it might? very cool though

It does not interfere with the wood, but I notched the rear bed cross sill. And yes you can just install the filler cap in the the wood bed.

you might check out a 60-61 *0rD falcon tank,I had an artical and photos on the set up. it looks like a "drop in" and it doesn't hang way down below the frame rails,and there cheap!...

I think this tank is the same as an early Mustang tank except for the filler location.

And here is an article on installing a '70 Cougar Tank in a '55 series 2 pickup. Not sure this would work on a 64-66 except on a long bed due to panhard bar crossmember location:

I used the universal truck tank from tanksinc.com. it doesn't sit too far under the frame rails. They do have a 90° bend you can use if you want to put a side fill in. I just go through the bed of the truck for now. The only downfall is the tank is only like 16 gallons. I will try and get it under bed picture and post it later.

The first picture is with the camera at bumper level. Does not hang below wrap around bumper. Second picture is phone pointing up from under bumper shows you how far under the frame rails it is. But then again it is only 16 gallons. Third picture is Blazer tank and my other truck. Tucked all the way up to the top of the frame rails. Of course this is with no roll pan or bumper.

I used one from a CJ5 Jeep. The filler neck comes out the side and I fill it from over the box side. I used a fill assembly from a Dodge truck (auto wreckers). The biggest annoyance for me is that the fuel sending unit is not of the correct ohms and I had to get another gauge, which has since stopped working. The capacity is also probably a little short for some peoples liking.

Even though I like having the tank out of my cab, I don't like having my spare in the bed. :(

For us that still get winter, I think getting the tank outside helps in not keeping the cab so cold. As for the spare tire how about using the vertical bolt in tire mount? I don't know if all the pick ups came with them or not but I don't find it an annoyance at all, or maybe only a bit when cleaning junk from around the tire.

I used a mustang tank from tanks Inc. Its 17 gallons. I would have liked a larger tank but I did not want it to hang below the bumper.
