Rear end decode
I have a 12 bolt out of a 78 1/2 ton with the code on the axle being KAD 180 W81 and on the ring gear GM 5 783. I am unable to read the rest of the numbers on the ring gear. The pinion gear has 10 34 which if I do the math comes out to a 3.40. The glove box is missing so I don't have the RPO codes for the truck. The rear is out of the truck so if I get time today I am going to install a tire and count the revolutions of the yoke and see if that comes close to the pinion numbers.

Re: Rear end decode
If the cover is off just count the teeth on the gears. Your going to waste a bunch of time trying to put tires on it to get an inaccurate measurement anyhow

Re: Rear end decode
Counting the teeth on the ring is not a problem but without removing the carrier there is no easy way that I know of to count the pinion teeth.

Re: Rear end decode
On any rear axle I've worked on you can see at least part of the pinion gear.
You just mark one tooth, and slowly rotate the pinion, counting until the mark comes back around. (If all goes well, you only have to count to "10" anyway....;)) Are you saying you can't see the pinion gear at all in this setup? K |
Re: Rear end decode
No I can see the pinion sometimes but not enough to get an accurate count. I can see the pinion enough to get the 10 34 numbers off of it. Thinking about making something out of spring steel or stiff wire and placing it to where it will click when it hits a tooth and just count the clicks.
Thanks to all for the help. Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device |
