torque management?

Remove it or not? I have googled this and come away 50/50 for each side of the coin. It seems like asking "which brand of oil?" Since my 01 5.3 is nearly stock and now in a truck that weighs 1/2 the suburban it came out of I would think I already abuse the tranny less than stock. Plus, this thing will only get driven maybe 1000 miles a year and not full throttle the whole way so how bad can it hurt? I don't want to destroy the trans but it seems a waste to build a street rod pickup to let the ecm retard timing every time you get on it. Does anyone here have experience with this? Thanks for any input.

4l60e I assume? Then its just a calculated risk on your part. If you can't afford a tranny rebuild, then don't turn it completely off.....rather just scale it back a little. I've tuned lots of LSx vehicles and have removed/reduced tq mgmt from every one. I let the owner make the call on how much.
If your vehicle is less than 4000lbs and you're not shifting any higher than ~6300-6400 rpm, then I personally would remove all of tq mgmt and expect it to live a reasonable amount of time if the trans is in good condition. If it's got a lot of miles on it, it's a crapshoot no matter what.

also it is a personal feeling, I like the way it feels when it shifts with the TM removed but some customers thought it was too harsh so I put it back in.
For longevity I would keep most of it in at low speeds and less and less with more speed.

Not trying to hyjack, but I'm not really familiar with the tq managment. Is that the reason my 01 tahoe won't spin the tires from a dead stop even when its wet out? With the g80 rear and 12.5" wide tires I don't plan on trying to do burnouts, but it just seems to bog from the start and pulling timing would def do that. How hard is it to remove the tq management? I'd assume you need a tech II programmer. Thanks in advance.

Yes. It's also why you feel a hesitation between gear changes, as tq mgmt pulls timing during shifts to save the bands/clutches of an inherently weak transmission. Popular tuning software suites such as HPTuners (what I use) or EFI Live will allow you to turn tq mgmt down/off.

Re: torque management?

Torq Mgmnt is only part of the tables, there are burst knock tables, IAT and ECT tables, plus some tables have very little timing in them at "WOT" areas.

my 6.0 from the van had 10* at WOT range and then you take into all the offsets that are in the PCM you might not be running any timing.....

did the trucks with 5 speeds behind them come with torque management on them from the factory, i dont see a reason why they would need it

Re: torque management?

wouldn't they? To lower hp when letting out the clutch from a stop and shifting... to save the clutch and other driveline pieces?

Re: torque management?

ALL of the GM products come with TM sometime around 1997ish (97 vettes).
And many of the other manufacturers adopted the same theories.
Its actually pretty neat in some instances where you need to control some of the power/tq.

In the racing side of things, I dislike the IAT/ECT and Burst knock tables but luckily the scanner can log it all and you can see what is going on and fix it...

Re: torque management?

I removed all TM from mine & I do like it. Like the others said its a matter of personal preference. I decreased my shift times also. I did the same thing in my S-10. The S-10 has probably been driven 30K since with no problems.

Re: torque management?

Is it possible to have 2 different "tunes" on one of these engines once its transplanted? I'm thinking along the lines of the tow/haul button that the automatics have. Can that be retained and altered so we have a (modified) torque management tune for around town driving, and also a non-tq mnt tune for having fun?

More specifically to me, is that something that could/should be done with a 5 speed?

Re: torque management?

you can change certain parimeters, but not enough for a completely different tune.

Re: torque management?

Darn, that would have been pretty cool in my opinion if they were totally separate tunes. Could of had a "fuel economy tune" and a "tear-ass-around-town" tune.

Re: torque management?

if the tuner knows what they are doing you can have a kick ass around town and good MPGs...and with a 5spd why do you need/want TM? you are in control of the shifts....

True, for myself I was thinking of it from an efficiency tune and performance tune like I said above. But for OKGMC4 he could have a tune that retained some tq management for everyday driving and transmission preservation but turned it off here and there if he wanted. Either way it won't work so thanks for the info guys.

Re: torque management?

I told the guy to turn the TM off. I needed an ecu and it was $150 for a used ecu with a stock tune. I had to specify what tire/ gear combo, which trans, no smog or VATS etc. He gave me the option on TM but said if I wanted to change anything in the engine tune (i.e. non-stock) or change shift points the cost goes to $250. My engine and trans are stock (for now) and I've had this engine for 4 years and never heard it fire so I thought in the interest of getting it running and driveable I'd go the cheaper route for the time being. Since I don't even have the bodywork done and assembled and I still need to paint and wire it plus weatherstrip, glass, interior, vintage air, etc engine mods are a ways down the road.
