Belt not lining up

well i have decided to keep that 86 C-20 and now that im driving it alot, im noticing the serp belt for the alt, fan, and crank it not exactly lining up. the smog pump pulley has been removed so it just those three pullys now but the more i drive it, the more a quarter of the serp belt wants to ride up on the back of the crank pulley. Any ideas? It has the 454

Re: Belt not lining up

Use shims or spacers to line up the parts/pulleys that are too far rearward. Use a straight edge on the front of the pulleys to line them up and get the angle right.

If you do put any spacers on the pulleys themselves, make sure they are PRECISELY the same (weight and thickness wise) and won't make it wobble or be off balance.

my 454 was like that too, the balancer was not install'd all the on the crank . it would eat bout 1/4" off the belt .

x2!!!

I would pull the balancer off, clean and lube the crank snout and key area.
Reinstall using a balancer installation tool (NOT a hammer or trying to drive it on with the attachment bolt!)
I bet everything lines up then!

A balancer not installed properly can get loose and break the crankshaft...
Dont ask how I learned this!!

Oh... you can usually rent the installation tool cheap!

OH... one more thing... when you removed the smog pump, did you replace it with the "dummy pully assembly"
If not, the belt tension may not be enough to keep the belt straight!
