Glassing dash
I'm just wondering if anybody knew how to fiberglass the dashes on our trucks ? Do I rip out the old vinyl or just glass over it? Any insight is much appreciated

Re: Glassing dash
Look up "coverlay" on the internet. They fit great. I have used them before.

Re: Glassing dash
Havent done it yet, but I was just gonna glass over mine. Take a dotco with an abrasive disc and knock down the high spots of the vinyl where the cracks are, use some bondo to fill them, smooth that out, and ruff the whole thing up with some 80 grit on a DA, and then lay a couple layers of glass over it.

Re: Glassing dash
I don't know if I want to do a coverlay it seems like a cheesy solution, besides the fact if I was to spend thy kinda money I may just go with brand new. Does anyone have any pics of thier dash project?

The way we did it was take a utility knife, cut the cracks deep enough so we could fill them with silicone, then took an ordinary bed sheet bought at Walmart with some spray adhesive, covered the dash, took some fiberglass cloth, cutting into strips. Using an aluminum cookpan, like you use for a turkey, putting the strips and pouring the resin over it, then applying to the dash. Sanded smooth. Use thin coats of bondo for any low spots. Also the link below has one he did.
Attachment 666244 You can also pm Stitch. He's a board member. He makes some really nice vinyl cover for these. If you'll go to the build section, there's a link in there for a contest he's running. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=415628 |

Re: Glassing dash
Alright so has anyone taken the whole vinyl off and glassed? I was wondering about the extra thickness myself

Re: Glassing dash
I know I didn't. Didn't see the need for it. Vinyl itself is not that thick. Not much thicker than a piece of paper. Well, maybe a little bit thicker. There's a lot of foam under the vinyl itself. If you take all the vinyl off, your fiberglass probably won't stick to the foam. Just my opinion.

Re: Glassing dash
Well I would take off the foam as well of coarse. I'm just wondering if any body has done so. Once i get around to doing mine I will post a how to with lots of pics

Re: Glassing dash
I see alright well now all I need to do is find out were I can get the glassing materials from what I read I just need to go to a boating shop or such and buy matting. How much matting should I get and how many layers of glass should I lay?
