BBC or SBC with blow thru set up?

So I am debating this very hard. I have never owned a BBC but I will tell you that there is a sound like no other when its an aluminum headed BBC with a solid roller and dumped mufflers. Since I have a SBC 355 in right now I was planning on doing a blow through set up until this motor blows then drop in a BBC and do the blow through since I will have everything else, just need to get new manifolds and fix the piping.

My question is this should I stick with the plan I have or drop in a BBC with a roots 8-71 blower and cruise around with no hood?

This truck is made to go out and have fun not be the fastest thing out there. ( I am building an LSx 03 Silverado with A/C and P/S for that )

Ideas and opinions are greatly appreciated guys.

so the blower is just for show?
a big block can easily make 600+ hp that is extremely streetable without a blower if your just wanting the looks and sound, certainly use a 8-71 bb

Re: BBC or SBC with blow thru set up?

Yeah the blower just for show. I just don't want the hassle of tuning a blow through set up. Plus I will finally be able to say I got a big block in it. This truck is not going to have A/C or anything. Just cruise and show and maybe some bracket racing occasionally. I wanted to turbo charge it but my 03 has a 5.3 LS motor in it that is going to get boosted.

I wish I could start a poll

N/A BBC
or
Blow Thru SBC

I guess i'm not sure what you're asking - are you referring to running a centrifugal supercharger with a blow through carburetor? I'm more of a roots blower person and have no issues running it on anything. Aside from the initial capital cost of acquiring and setting up the supercharger (about the same for a roots v. centrifugal), you do not need to run a blowthrough carburetor(s) on a roots style blower. Obviously, it can be a lot cheaper building a naturally aspirated BBC, especially if your ultimate goal is to run a BBC.

here is my opinion. nothing sounds like a bad-ass blown big block.
however, unless your extremely talented with blower motors, it will probably never run right.
on a street legal street driven vehicle, you can build a virtually maintenance free normally aspirated motor with as much street usable power as a blown motor will provide for the same amount of money. you could build a 10:1 compression big block with no blower, single carb, and make 600+ hp and run 9 seconds in the 1/4 mile

Re: BBC or SBC with blow thru set up?

Sorry guys I should have been more specific. I wanted to build a blow through TURBO set up on the 355 small block I got in right now. But I was contemplating building a mild BBC with low compression with a nice cam to run around until I finished gathering the parts to strap on a roots blower.

I have been looking around all morning and as much as I want a big block, its so much cheaper to build a 6.0 LQ4 carbed with a cam and heads to make about 600 HP.

What is you all's opinion on a big block vs an LS motor carbed?

Re: BBC or SBC with blow thru set up?

What is your budget for this set up (since you have a couple irons in the fire)..

My 418ci LS1 all said and done probably cost $10k..
Shortblock $5,000
Lifters/Cam/Pushrods/timing set $850
Heads $2500 (AFR 225 with light weight intakes and titanium retainers)
Misc covers and oil pan $200
Coil packs $100
Oil Pump $100
Pulley $200
Intake $400
Throttle Body $550
Injectors $300
Computer and harness $350

Given it is fuel injected so there might be a little more money there. You can go inexpensive with a pull out but a stock 5.3 or 6.0 isn't going to compare to a built big block.

That probably didn't help much did it?

Believe me, pick one and go with it, otherwise you're going to be wasting a ton of money. I'm building a turbo 385 right now with a Garrett TV7301 turbo and I can assure you, it isn't for the faint of heart. First you're going to have to find a decent turbo (which can range from $450-$2500). Then the BOV and Wastegate (Plan on spending between $400 and $600). Then the headers and hotside piping ($1000 easy). Then the cold side (can be done for around $400). Now to the motor itself...I just ordered a quick fuel 750 cfm blowthrough and an Aeromotive A1000 with regulator for $1360 which is a good deal if you do any shopping around. And don't forget the bottom end with forged rods, pistons, and crank will be around $2000.

I assume you probably won't pull out all the stops building a turbo motor, but I just don't see the point in building 2 different motors with the intent on running the first one to failure...

If I were you, I'd either:

a) build the 355 with a big turbo (Something with a 1.00 - 1.32 A/R) and stick with it.

or

b) build the big block with a big turbo and stick with it.

Just my $.02

Re: BBC or SBC with blow thru set up?

IMO, Get a BBC. You will not regret it. I have a very mild cam in my 462 and run 91 octane. Yesterday, at about 40mph i gave about 3/4 throttle and i go sideways for about 50yards before letting off. If you plan on a turbo later then just do a 9.0-1 comp from the start. You can have a 600hp BB for about $5000. My brother had a 400hp 350 in an S-10 and even that was not as scary as this can be. If your dreaming of a BBC in the future, why waste the $$ now on a SBC?

Re: BBC or SBC with blow thru set up?

when building with factory parts, a sbc is the king of cheap.

when building with aftermarket parts, its really hard to beat a normally aspirated bbc for power/money

I remember when a used set of bare aluminum heads for a bb was $2000.
now you can get a brand new fully assembled set for $1000

Re: BBC or SBC with blow thru set up?

go boost, turbos are more efficient than superchargers as they use spent energy to generate more efficient power rather than stressing your motor with belts and pulleys, also you can use a properly set up turbo system to get you better gas mileage, and they sound way better.
