Fuel tank connection under trailer hitch?

3 Attachment(s)
This is my 83 C20 Suburban. It had this air quick connect mounted under the reciever hitch with a rubber hose hat runs to a connection in the fuel filler tube.
What in the world is this for? I can't imagine it can suck fuel out of the tank because of high the fitting is. Is the fitting on the filler tube supposed to be there? Is it just supposed to be a vent?

Thanks in advance...
Blake

I will also note that is truck is in good shape overall with less than 94K when I found it. Nearly stock. I imagine this served a purpose for a camper trailer?
The 3 previous owners used the truck for horse trailers, race car trailers and campers...

My guess is that the PO used it to pump fuel into the tank from a transfer tank of some sort, trailer mounted or from another vehicle.

I am planning on removing it....should I just plug the hole in the filler neck or is something else supposed to be there.

Was this common for old campers with generators or something?

Don't think so, Nothing would pull fuel through the filler neck. I'd agree with 83GMCK2500 on transferring fuel from another source, Just remove the hose and cap the neck off.....

I never saw something like this, but I routed the vent lines from my dual tank sending units back to the rear tire area to keep the gas smell out of my cab. Venting at the filler neck might help with filling the tank though.

Well, I ended up taking the hose off and the barb is welded to a washer and welded to the filler tube. I just capped it off.
I'm in the process of installing a Reese Titan class 5 hitch on the ol' burban.
